I wanted a tacho, but not screwed on - it had to look factory. After many mental prototypes, I dediced to fit a WT cluster into my steel dash, and change over the wiring to the rectangular clips. The only thing then is to, as I understand it, run the additional wire for the tacho. Anyway, phase 1 was to physically mount the cluster, which I did by fabricating a binnacle onto the old dash, then covering it all. I used carbon fibre effect vinyl. Here's how it looks so far

do you have any plans for changing the heater controls layout? I have the same dash (1 litre steel dash) and would like the stereo to fit where the heater controls are and to re arrange the heater controls lower somehow, not sure if it can be done with the standard cables etc. |

I hadn't given too much thought to stereo as yet. I'm not sure it could be done using the standard cable but they're pretty straight forward, and if you used the longest ones where the shorter ones are and replaced the longer ones as needed with generic ones I'm sure you could do it. |

How much does that carbon fibre vinyl stuff cost? Thanks mate, cost price for the one I got was $23 =gst pm. I've found a couple of other suppliers - not sure of the price from them but I imagine it would be around the same. Considering normal marine vinyl is not much under $20pm it's really good value, and this Nortex brand is without doubt the nicest vinyl I've worked with. |

I can't believe how easy these cars are to work on! Must have been designed and built by men. The dash I fitted was from a 1989 sierra, going into a 1981. All the wires were the same colour, the only addition was the wire from the coil to the tacho. Two spares; one the the 4wd light and the other I can't remember, but all electrical now working without problem. Totally amazing. |
