Post subject:  DIY Sand Flag - On the Cheap...
Well i didnt ever think i would be posting in here, :lol: , but after seeing a few home made sand flags i thought i would give it a go, and take pics along the way, and do it as cheap as i can, that didnt rust, and could be put up and taken down, in under 5mins, this is what i came up with... enjoy ! :wink:

Materials -

15mm x 50cm length of irrigation Conduit = $2.50 from Bunnings
1 x 15mm Screw in connector = $1.30 from Bunnings
1 x 15mm T piece = $3.50 from Bunnings
1 x Pack ( 4 Rolls ) Safety tape ( optional ) = $9 from Bunnings
1 x Pack of 9mm Tent Poles ( 4 to a pack, with elastic string ) $10 from Rays Outdoor
1 Meter of Flouro Cloth = $8 from Spot Light Craft and Fabrics

Odds and ends
Red Electrical tape and some small gauge wire...

All up, $26 without warning tape, $35 with warning tape...


Rolled the tent poles in Safety tape, for extra visibility, electrical tape to hold it on, made wire loops at top of one tent pole to attach flag, used electrical tape to attach wire... threaded elastic string thru the tent poles, and attached string to wire at top near flag, so it doesnt come off... left plenty of string to come out the bottom pole, so i can pull it tight out of the T piece, and tie it off... glued 15mm pipe into connector, after cutting it down to size to suit, attached T piece to nudge bar with big cable ties, screwed in pipe with connector, and held pipe onto nudge bar with cable ties again... got someone to make up a flag on their sowing machine, he he... and thats really all there is to it...

the tent pegs are a good idea, means you can fold it up and keep it in your car.

id be a lil worried about the whipping that tent poles can make, especially when 4wding.

is that a problem? does it swing all over the place?

those tent poles can handle heaps of abuse too - mine has been going strong for about 4 years with a big aussie flag on it, heaps of wind, smashing trees etc

Yeah, i liked the idea of fold up... they do swing around around a bit in the wind, they did have a 6mm pole, but i went with the 9mm, so hopefully they dont swing around to much... but havnt tried it out offroad yet... might put it up on the powerlines trip, and she how it goes... :wink:

Good to hear... it wont be used much, well maybe not much, depends how much i go to the beach... do they use sand flags for other places besides the beach ? :D

i just use mine mainly on beach and track work (mainly track work)

although they are flexible they are surprisingly strong

far out thats a tall flag!!! be careful testing it at the powerlines, you might get electrocuted =P

Its not that tall really... but they do need to be somewhat tall to be effective... Carlos83's is higher than mine, his is roof mounted... but if the powerlines are that low, that this could touch them, then it would be unsafe to be at the powerlines... EMR would be very high, let alone the risk of becoming a crispy critter ! 8O :lol:

I bet a bought one would cost a bit... close to $100 i bet... ok no problem... you can check it out on Sundays trip, and we can see how my design holds up to the trip... :wink: :lol:

that looks good, it's about the right height. i think mine is about 2.5m long & it's mounted at roof height. the taller the better when in dune country (within reason)

just remember that you'll most likely smash the fluro's in the servo when you fill up. :oops:

Mine wont be up all the time, put up when needed, take down when i dont... :wink:

Been there, done that... In Karratha with a mine equipped Prado, huge flag on the top, low roofed servo... Oops...

I made a start, got a rib out of a busted large umbrella,
about 2.4 meters long, and very flexible.
Not decided on foldability yet, it won't be on very often, or will stay on forever :)

It is hollow, so fitting some threads in, as joiners may work

Well... my cheap DIY Sand Flag was put to the test offroad, bouncing over rocks, and taking gravel mounds/hills at speed, even getting some air... and it stayed in one piece, with no damage, it didnt even flick around to much... so i am happy ! :wink: :D
