Hey Hawky, you been very quiet, he he... Nice work, looks good ... been thinkin about making my own as well, so this has given me idea's.... what size is the pipe, from a guess i would say 3in ?
Where did you get it all from, Bunnings, and how much did it cost ?

Does look like a bit of black 2.5 Whats to stop small animal making their home in there? and for that matter, whats stopping it filling with water when you're drive in the rain? Fairly certain PVC glue doesn't like vibrations or heat. |

lol vibrations and heat. I didnt even use glue to hold my pvc snorkel together and i was going through bonnet deep water at moreton and it worked magically. providing that the rest of your electric gear is sealed. |

Steel is a good idea, and worth considering... but i am guessing it would add to the cost a fair bit... having to get it bent up etc... stainless would be better, but again, would add to the cost significantly, probably as much as a fibreglass snorkel... the PVC pipe, is a good cheap alternative, and if it gets damaged, cheap to fix...

All due respect for your project Hawky, but PVC snorkels are a terrible idea. I know our driving is tighter than many other places in Australia, but everyone with a PVC snorkel I've seen has broken it over and over again.... by smacking it on trees, banks etc. They just keep getting cut shorter and shorter. A broken snorkel is worse than no snorkel at all. Steve. |

The pipe is 65mm and all up cost me under 40 bucks, thats with a 3metre length. I already had the glue and paint

Its a 1.6L injected with the sierra air filter box moved to the otherside, lines up perfect

I couldnt justify 300-400 bucks for a proper one and with price aside i wanted somthing quick and easy, which im not saying a metal one woundlnt be but id say this would b easier and does the same job
and the sun wont reflect in ur eyes off this one

A broken snorkel is worse than no snorkel at all. Steve. yer fair enough i didnt really think of that but as macbear said it would b just as easy and cheap to fix as originally making it (i hope)

You can buy snorkel socks that are oiled, that will cover it and block/repel most of the rain... but i i just had a thought, a small piece of metal flyscreen mesh cut to size and lipped over the edge, with a piece of oiled foam inside, and a big hose clamp to hold it all on, would work just as well...

I havnt glued the top part on just so if it does start raining heavy I can spin it around no worries as I reckon that's sure to stop any water gettin in whilst ya driving

I had a pvc snorkel on my first zook with a safari snorkel head, it worked great and was cheap to make. Just be aware that they are very fragile so keep them away from tree's on tight tracks ect. Mine broke pretty fast. For my second sierra i ended up using straight 3inch exaust tube and then bought 3 inch mandrel bends. Only cost about $100 to make and 1 day....something to consider if you end up wanting to change it in the future. |
