hey guys these are the very first pics that i took of my vitara project car.
but since these pics it has had a fair amount of work done to it its had 3 days grinding and cutting chassis parts that arn't needed and still have abit more to go its had the engine, engine wiring loom, bumpers, dash, diffs, gearbox/transfer case and been doing other bits to it and hopefully would be a rolling chassis by end of march im hoping.
the cars been mainly self funded up untill now because i'm not able to sell anymore bits from it.

i would like to make into a comp/winch truck.

originaly i bourght the car in the first place for the efi to convert my 2 door vit to efi but the head one the efi motor was no good and was going to cost alot then i was out side one day looking at it thinking if i did a bit of work to it it would come up pretty bloody good and then i remembered that i got a v6 commodore motor laying around ready to be put into a car complete with wiring loom cut down for engine transplant from my last failed project car so i put two and two together and it just started to happen.

the plans are
run 35 silverstone extreams
v6 commodore motor
later plans supercharge the motor
gq diffs for a much much wider wheel base
massive lift
front locker eventually
custom front,side and rear bars
roll cage

the list could keep on going on too much things to do to it i keep forgetting what i plan for it so i bourght a white board

What gear box will you use ?

Post subject:  Re: very first pics of my vitara project car

at this point in time im going to use the commodore box as it's easier and cheap i got a gq box and transfer case that i could get an adaptor for it but i think there like $1,000 which is abit of money but then how much do you think this would cost me in the end haha $$$,$$$? im just going to get something made up for my transfer case so i could use it as a divorced transfer case being cheaper mainly. but getting the adaptor for gq box to commodore engine would be easier though

How big is the Commo box? GQ ones are massive aren't they? Then again if it's only a trailer rig you can hack the crap out of the tunnel I guess. At least with the GQ you have an easy option for the transfer...

haha yeh mate the commodore ones are a fair bit smaller than gq. but useing the gq box would be easier as that its allready got the transfercase bolted onto the back and if i use the commodore box im gonna make an adaptor plate to be able to use the transfer case as a divorced case as the adaptor kits to bolt the trans case to commo box are pretty expensive

Why not 80 diffs with Commo motor and hilux transfer?

Sell the GQ transfer (people want them for twin transfers) to fund the lux case.

There you have width and more/cheaper aftermarket gear.

X quite a lot.

In fact you could probably score a whole 80 series rolling chassis for not very much.
There's nothing wrong with GQ diffs, but there's nothing wrong with 80 series either.

With a relatively light car and small tyres the perceived advantages of the patrol diffs aren't as relevant.

I assume (hope) you are planning to use a T700 auto from the commodore ( a wise choice, even if the engine isn't)

Commodore's have a very long extension housing on the end of the auto. Add in a sensible jackshaft (300mm would be a good guide) and you might be surprised how short the rear driveshaft becomes. Add in offset and some lift and you could be in trouble.

I know you are trying to do this cheap, but I'm assuming as you are in Vic and there's stuff all comps to enter, so you will be driving this on the road at some point and driving on recreational trips with other cars.

Spend the money and do it properly. Perceived savings now will end up costing you double later on.

My Choice:

Commodore V6 (if you must) T700/LT230/75 series/80 series cruiser diffs

The LT230 has a range of high range ratios available, and unlocking the centre diff will give you burns/digs. Low range is 3.XX:1

In fact, if I was building what you were planning I'd buy a whole 3.9 auto discovery and pull the whole driveline from that. It would give you the same output as the commodore, a sweet ZF auto, an LT230, and small, wide, full float diffs with big brakes and flexy suspension parts.

Setting up a patrol (or even hilux) transfer case to provide equivalent gearing is a $$$$$$ job. Add reduction gears+a rear disconnect on top of the case+adapter/divorce adaptation costs.

Just take a step back and really take stock on this project. You're planning an epic build. I don't know how much experience you have which such a huge project, but I'd really want to know what you wanted to achieve with the end product before you bought a whole lot of stuff and burnt a whole lot of time.

There's a few of problems you might face:

You get it finished and get spanked by a sierra on 31's

You get it finished and get spanked by a GQ on 35's because it's more stable/suspension works better/it doesn't break down or something.

You never get it finished.

You hit a brick wall with driveline length/front diff to sump clearance/steering won't clear or something and you give up.

Have a good look at rikstr's family crawler for something that's going to be as capable for much less hassle.

Steve.

That's actually the first thing I thought when I read that post too...

Sounds like a fun concept, and I'd love to see it happen, but...
