It's so trivial I almost didn't post, but then I thought about the days of pondering where to put the rotten thing!
For some time I've run the CB with velcro on it, simply stuck to the back of the rear set (folded forward) placing it over the centre console. I've taped the aerial to the seats and used a ciggy lighter plug to get power from one of the sockets. That's pretty non intrusive, but it's also very temporary.
Since I hate doing anything that can't be undone when I want to sell the car, it's been the cause of a lot of angst!
Several owners have their CB's simply velcroed to the passenger side of the transmission tunnel, but that doesn't do it for me.
The answer came when I managed to find a ridiculously cheap Uniden with a remote mic control, (a one-off special from www.ryda.com), I paid about a third of the GME equivalent, so I'm pretty happy.
The dash panel under the steering wheel is easy to get off by simply removing three screws. If you stand on your head and look waaaay up against the dash, you might even see the fuse panel. I had to ask the dealer where it was!
Anyways, under that plastic there's a metal beam which is just right for providing a rigid connection for the set, I just made a simple aluminium bracket to mount it off (the black bit). The mic exits under the steering wheel and mounts on the dash with double sided tape hard against the console and high enough so that the cord just hangs below it.
Mounting the antenna was another problem. There are so many folds in the skin of the thing that there isn't anywhere a folded bracket will fit round the bonnet. I thought of poking a hole in the roof for a while, then the simple solution turned up.
It's probably marginally legal even with the nifty bit of body trim, as it could be a danger to pedestrians, but since mounting it I've found a spotlight bracket at SuperCheap in Aluminium for around $70.00. It's got a neat little bar in front of it, and has two holes, so I can get a 3G phone antenna too if I want!
I suspect that will happen shortly!
