Has anyone made a rear bar with a wheel carrier DIY? Interested in having a look at what people have made. I like the look of the Calmini rear, but I’m not sure how easy it would be to obtain one and how ridiculous price would be.

I had a DIY one I made for some near pointless reason (oh I wanted a tow hitch that wasn't dragging on the ground).
I removed it and went for a wheel and the car improved a massive amount.
Pointless weight at the extreme edge of the car, lots of suck.

Almost every kg of pointless modifications makes the car worse.

Sierras are not patrols/landcruisers or big utes etc, it's pointless tarting them up like one.
Suzuki already made a fantastic tyre carrier.

My soft top doesnt carry a spare, and the spare on my daily (tintop) is under review, as a plug kit and little air compressor is a lot lighter.

Yeah good point about weight, I’d seen some stuff about the rear door cracking so I was going to do away with the spare on it.

This whole light weight business is new for me, going from a 3 ton 80 series to a 900kg zook

Touch wood, I have never needed the spare on a sierra. Another 25-35kg saved

I suppose any weight saved is good weight saved. It’s difficult to decide, seems like one of those Murphy’s law situations

I’ve asked who has had an unrepairable tyre failure with an LT tyre on a Sierra for years, because I’ve never seen one in 25 years of suzuki club membership. I’ve been told of two.

So there isn’t no risk, but it’s incredibly small compared to, say, a patrol or cruiser.

If you MUST run a spare (and I don’t) look at using an suzuki x-90 space saver- it’s a 16x 4.5 rim with a very compact tyre on it, which is what the back door of a Sierra was actually engineered to hold.

I spent ages trying to find a space saver rim that I could use on my camping trailer, but gave up in the end.
Didn't know they came on X90s, will keep an eye out for one now....

They’re a Kei jimny wheel and tyre IIRC.

A replacement tyre would be almost impossible to get here, but it isn’t going on road tbh so it’s a bit academic.

The hassle is finding a light enough tyre. 6.00 16’s are light. They get heavy bigger than that.

I did it... And not feeling bad for the extra weight.
It comes with lots of comfort and easy life on trips.

Sorry I missed this. I don’t run a bumper at all really. I’ve also just eliminated the folding tailgate in the interest of dropping weight.

I understand I am a little late. I made one just cause. It's heavy but I like making stuff. It's 3mm with a 5mm brace to chassis. And had a pivot mount so it opens sync with the back door.
As stated though. It's entirely over weight and useless. But I like it.

I made a bumper and swing away carrier too.
YES, it's heavy.
NO, I don't take the spare with me everywhere. Only when I explore by myself, in isolated areas, where I have zero interest in walking out from.....

Also made a chainsaw carrier and a custom aluminum shovel. With only a few hours of tig time ever, I'm ok with the welds, lol. They hold, they work.

One day [ year ] I may make all aluminum bumpers, and cut the weigh in half. We'll see.
