Well not quite yet but its part way there

I wanted to replace my ageing skateboard bearing fridge slide for a while and make some drawers up to get a bit of space back whilst keeping things light and simple cause I am lazy

heres some pics so far, the fridge slide is a set of 700mm bottom mount runners and will have a 500mm drawer under it and 700mm drawer beside it (the short drawer is for room to put some other stuff in front of it behind the seat)

total cost so far is about $90 for runners, $32 for ply and I will need to get some kind of rails to attach my fridge tie downs too and some latches to keep them shut when moving

Royce where did you get the rails from as I am at the moment doing a set of draws Etc. for the cruiser.

Did some more and finally finished to the point of being useable

some things I noticed along the way

drawer runners suck, they really need to be in a frame a lot stiffer than what I made
leave more room around the drawers than you think to allow for sagging when loaded etc

latches that are simple and cheap are impossible to find, I did numerous laps of bunnings trying to come up with something then these hit me in the face, they are simple door latches that were like $6 so my drawers latch shut by themselves and once I make up some handles will be simple to open while opening the draw, I really didnt want to use patio bolts or padbolts, I would forget and leave em unlocked and drive off ang bang bang bang down the road

Sometimes Royce you just have to forget about the Norm and go with what works for the job at hand. Looks better now, what is next some lights and power plugs.

45kg runners are your problem, need to be about 75kg to 100. bit more expensive but worth it. There is also a locking slide available that locks both in and out.

For some reason I'm not a fan of ply, even though I can get it for free, for a strength to weight comparasion taking into account life as well it just feels like you have to go too thick to be viable.

nice job though I'd love a set of draws in the cruiser but the wife says NO. I'd be making a fridge slide tomorrow if there was a steel merchant open where I could get some angle.

i reckon ya need to beef them up a bit, they look a bit too flimsy to last all that long over a heap of rough tracks or corrugations, with a loaded fridge, theres a fair bit or weight up there you're trying to restrain maybe you should do a search on here, i remember someone posting up a good set up not so long ago oh fuck! i thought i was somewhere else for a while

i once made a storage rack similar to the one pictured, works ok far a few trips, but full fridges are farkin heavy

Bruce has 100kg runners that still sag, I am only talking about 3mm here

yeah the locking slides would of been useful, didnt know about them until too late

Steel would either be too complex to make up for my attention span or too heavy, I have never had more in my fridge that I cant lift it full onto the slide and the rest of my camping gear I can carry to the car in one go so this is really for something to do and a bit of convenience than any hard core storage

but if it falls apart I will post vids of the fire and then design something a bit better rather than make it up as I go

Royce is short with everyone

Wood/steel/alloy/crepe paper at least you have made them. Better then my non-exsistant ones. Plus I tend to over engineer, so yours will most probably be fine.

Thanks for the thread Royce, its good to see people given it a go and sharing ideas.

I saw a similar design in the back of a 100 series.

For the sliding action of the shelves he went down the road of butchers plastic. Basically he cut 2 inch wide strips fixes some to the bottom of the draw and the rest to floor of his 4by. No issues of weight on your runners for they are also your support for the draw . I opened the heavily packed draws and found they slid freely and easily.

He was saying that this type of slide never fails even after having fun in the bush.

The fridge slide could use the same idea the only prob would be the weight from the extra materials needed to make it work.

I'm planning to do the same in our shorty, I'll post pics when I get to making it.

hey mate great job on the draw system and fridge slide looks tops, sorry for a bit of a dumb Q but what lift are you running and what tyre size? as that first pic gave me some inspiration for my vit.
