First off to do this, You will need the correct grade gear oil and a 3/8" square drive bit, I just use a 3/8" sliding T bar or ratchet and a Drain pan, You will need about 2L of oil. Buy a 5L bottle, you will be saving money especially if you replace it reguarly or are doing the front diff at the same time.

Chock the front wheels and jack the car up on some stands.

The top hole is to fill it, The bottom hole is to drain.

Image

Place your drain pan under the diff. Remove the top plug first, It would be a pain if you drain the oil first then realising you can't undo the plug to fill it back up.

Image

Once all the oil is drained, put the drain plug back in and tighten.

If you bought a 1L bottle, they usually have a spout that pulls out to help pouring. Alternatively you can use a funnel with a length of hose. Pour the oil into the filler hole until it starts to come through the hole. Then replace the plug and tighten.

I use an oil syringe/pump. It makes filling the gearbox and transfer case much easier. Put the hose into the bottle and pull on the lever to fill, push the lever to release.

Image

Make sure you dispose of your oil thoughtfully, You can dump your oil at most mechanic workshops or at your local council tip in the designated area. Don't put it into the used bottle and place it in the bin which will end up as landfill, the bottle may brake and spill oil into the ground!! That will make baby jesus cry and Chuck Norris will hunt you down for revenge.

I bought one of these from Ripco a couple of years ago,
Best $30 I ever spent, but if I ever upgrade, I'll be buying
One of those ones that you plug your air compressor into.

10mm sqaue bit actually.

Whilst the 3/8 may work perfectly fine the majority of the time. If you get one that's really tight, the slightly larger 10mm will fit better and won't slip rounding out the bolt head.

Holy crap, all this talk of oil pumps, I've just been using the penrite oil with the pull up spout, a bit of hose (just slipped over the spout) and squeeze the bottle...

Takes a while though, especially when we do both diffs, transfer and transmission...

I might rig up some kind of pump or buy one for when I go to do the transfer case oil for the 1000km change after my new gears.

x2 on the 10mm bit

the previous owner of my jimny sent it into the shop to get the oil changed and they ended up making the square, not so squareish.

You can get away with that on the diffs, where there is room to get the bottle over the fill hole - but on the transmission & transfer case it's a different story, the pump is a couple of bucks, makes the job easier and usually a lot less messy.

For those who are reading this because they dont know how to change thier diff oil, most of them who wont do do it an are reading on how to do it the first time wont want to make or buy a pump, so this way is even easier.

Put some hose pipe on the end of a funnel.
I dont have a pic, but Im sure many of you can visualise a piece of garden hose, about a meter long, on the end of a funnel.

Feed it down though the engine bay for the front, or the RH wheel well for the rear. For the Gearbox or Transfer case unscrew the gearbox lever boot and feed it though there.

Enjoy

But thanks for highlighting the cheaper alternative. :)

This is what I was saying I do, I don't use garden hose or a funnel, just some left over irrigation pipe (really small stuff for the garden...) and put it over the spout on the bottle.

If you have a body lift you can get to everything from the sides and the diffs just from the front and black.

Can you use LSD oil in open diffs?
Got an emergency oil change to do before a trip and only have LSD left.

No sealant or gasket goo is required.

But If for some reason you do need to use it, use grey sealant.
