I know this thread has been dead for aged but I.have a quick question. If I pull the brakes off the front of a sierra and put them on the rear of mine will I need any kit or parts? Will I need a bracket to hold in the bearing at the rear/hold the caliper or can I use the front caliper bracket on the rear ?

Why arnt people using cable operated discs from a trailer for a transfer mounted handbrake?

I think most people would prefer to avoid the transfer handbrake option altogether.

There are various options which can be used to achieve a disc handbrake solution.
The drums hang down and get caught on things fairly easily, but it is fairly robust. If this is a disc it is much easier to bend.

Packaging a trailer mechanical caliper will be more difficult than packaging the other calipers usually used when doing disc handbrake conversions.

IMO the neatest and best handbrake solution when doing rear disc conversion is to use appropriate calipers with handbrake options.
These are from other other cars, and are easier to approve/engineer as they are suitable to the application.

Spidetrax stuff is well engineered, and it will install with no problems.

However, the caliper used is a wilwood go-kart caliper and is not self adjusting. Because of the very small pad area, it will need regular adjustment to keep it operating effectively. This isn't really different to the 1.0/1.3NT transfer brake, which isn't self adjusting either, but it's worth knowing.

It's also quite expensive for a small mechanical caliper and some bolts and brackets.

The handbrake on WT sierras IS self adjusting as it's on the rear shoes.

Personally, if you're not concerned about legality (and if you are fitting a rear disk brake kit without engineering approval, you're not) then run a line locker.

Was more of a question to this post of steves
Seemed to me that a trailer calliper would be a lot better than a go cart calliper if someone wanted to go for a transfer handbrake

Hey guys, I'm looking at this kit from LROR. Has anybody got any experience with it?
Really comprehensive instructions, plus it seems to be the only one that has a bespoke backing plate that 100% protects the wheel bearing / axle seal.

I'm also wanting to preserve my coily's handbrake stock functionality (and pass engineering) so I'm looking for a rear caliper that has provision for a standard handbrake. Are there any calipers have people found that's interchangeable with the Sierra front caliper that has a handbrake?

Add engineering has a rear disc kit that uses bg mazda 323 rear discs with inbuilt handbrake that retains factory cable.

@ Brenno, I tried looking online but I couldn't find any more info on that kit. Do you have a link handy?

@ bum, I saw that one, but I'm a bit concerned how it doesn't protect the bearing 100%. I heard that it means these cars end up chewing through bearings / seals?

Modify a SJ40 bearing retainer plate to protect the bearing. That's what the low range kit which uses sierra front callipers does.
