Hey all,

I've been trying to trace an annoying 'clunk' in the driveline when I take off from standstill - it sounds like something is loose when unloaded, then engages as the clutch is let out. I have what I think is excessive movement in my gearbox mount, like the (rubber?) pads are worn, allowing the trans case to torque a bit.

Are these replaceable, and if so where can I get them from? It'd be good to do it when the transfer comes out for the gears.

Any other ideas what this might be? Unis feel fine - no play there... there's a bit of rotation in the drive-shaft before the diff gears engage - could the pinion depth or something in there be out? Is it worth looking at engine mounts, even if the vibration doesn't feel unusual?

Yes i would suspect engine mount also

Random clunk? Hitting the body thunk?

Excess pinion backlash can do it too. How much does the pinion flange turn before it engages drive? Turn back and forth? Could be just backlash in the whole drivetrain

Engine mount can easily be broken, but visibly ok.
Mine was obviously broken a while, but I didn't notice till I pulled old engine out.

There is an extra tranny mount on some models (Torque mount I think)
A circular one too the side.
Its worth adding if yours don't have one.

This is the gearbox mount I'm wondering about replacing (my bad, had a quick look the other day and it was sitting under the transfer, so figured it bolted up.)

How do I tell if an engine mount is flogged? Couldn't get much movement out of them by hand today, grabbing the block and heaving it around or grabbing the mounts themselves...

Si, the driveshaft turns maybe 10-15deg by hand, I think I can feel gears turning in that range before it stops, but that could be transfer or diff I guess.

I could not move my engine by hand, so thought mounts were fine, but I was wrong.
Tis usually the passenger side that dies.
Maybe jack up engine, see if mount separates.

Yes that is the torque mount. That and the other tranny mount still available new.
The main tranny mounts can become soft, or break, I'm told. So I carry a spare.

The tranny mounts double as rear engine mounts, making it hard to tell if engine mounts are dead.

My driveshaft turns a lot, due to slack in lock rite.

I had a hard to find noise, which turned out to be the exhaust mount under passenger foot area.

Hey, just a thought, have a look at your trailing arm bushes!

Mine where cracked and what happens when they are cracked as soon as the clutch engages, because the trailing arm bushes are cracked, the diff and arms go thud as they move rapidly and quite harshly.

All the suspension bushes were replaced a few months ago.

Will get new engine and gearbox mounts just for the sake of it. Hopefully a rear airlocker isn't too far away so the backlash etc can be reset then, and at some point I might replace all the unis as preventative maintenance too.
