Since i bought the car the rear diff has always been noisy. Just recently its gotten alot worse. Theres more backlash. Theres an oil leak from the left side. the whine is now painful. Luckily i made it back from sydney without failure. I dont know if its related but the brakes are soft now aswell. and there is a abit of feedback through the pedal at slow speed there is a fairly consistent pulse in time with a clicking noise from the left side. |

Yeah im considering doing vit brakes up front and rear discs. Is the conversion worth it? What should i be looking for in terms of diff wear? |

That oil leak past the seal will be all over your rear disc/drum... may explain the lack of brakes. And lack of fluid in the diff will increase noise. I rebuilt the NT rear drums for around a hundy - new slaves, shoes source 1 drum within spec and skim both. Wheel bearing from a gd brand cost around the same. I pulled the axle I thought was loose - did that 1 and popped the other side out of interest as theres no point toppin the diff up twice and the other side was fully fkd. Have a full front end and a spare pair of front discs so its worth it to me to do a disc rear. |

If the drums are poked its worth spending 100 on them bringing them back to spec for the now - the big killer is mud. If you can afford to have it off the road you can make the rear disc brackets for far less than the few hundy plus asking price, I have some drums parted off and some plate sittin under my bench at wk awaiting my interest/ along with F+R axles 2diffs calipers etc... ha ha |

Shipping from NZ may be a deal breaker... The rear I have is a bit stuffed - I am not sure if theres anything of worth in it but it came with the rest of the parts and havnt looked at it too closely as I was planning on buyin new side gears for a front one or a locker with couplers. |

oh didnt realize you were in NZ. I got new bearing kit on the way. will see how everything goes. if the diff is still as noisy as it is i will save as hard as i can for a locker and get it done by a shop. |

Got my zook with some garden hose breathers into the cab, I know my rears on its way out but the hose just ampliflies the sound - put my finger partway over the end at 100 k and the noise all but stops - you could also try the thickest diff oil you can buy to quieten it down (not a real fix but works for me for now) FYI I am currently feeding the g13 the thickest cheapest oil money can buy as its gettin more and more thirsty... |

left side axle seal. I started tearing everything down. diff has made a freakin mess of the brakes. Has anyone got any tips for getting the axles out? |

I made some ugly slide hammers from scrap 1 for the drum and 1 for the axle. I hear you can rebolt the rim on and work the drum off / this is the hard part esp if they are worn. If the handbrake is on the axle it needs to be backed off - Tcase dont worry. If your stuck maybe take the shoes off and refit drum + wheel, unbolt slave cyl fittings(clamp hose) undo 4 bolts on housing flange and it should pop off - more or less. Do 1 side at a time if your redoing the drums so you can look on the other side to see how it goes together. All this is my uneducated opinion / I am one that can fiddle with stuff but struggles to remember exactly what I did |

bearings & collars in the oven & axles in the chest freezer. if your bearings have the dust seal on them remove them before cooking. |

awesome, did they just drop straight on? how long & what temp did you bake the bearings for & how long did you have the axles on ice? i'm guessing you had a chest freezer, cause my axles have no chance of fitting in my freezer.

yeah nice big freezer. turned it right down. about -20. bearings at 200 for 10 mins or so. couldnt get the collars on even at 300. left the axles for half hour. and the bearings dropped straight on and almost imediately locked in plce. |
