Post subject:  diff breather q's
Just wondering if when running a diff breather for both diffs wether it is safe to connect both on to the same line via t-piece? and also wether there is a major concern when running diff, transfer and gear box breathers into to snorkle before the cars air filter?
i was thinking of t-piecing both diffs together and a on separate line t-piecing gearbox and transfer together then putting motorcycle fuel filters before they plumb into the snorkel.

just trying to wade through the mystery of these questions because alot of people say yes and theres also alot of no's on both subjects.

Do a search, there is a good thread around here with heaps of good info about optimum breather diameter, flow rates and pressures.

cheers for the link matthew. i have read that thread and another few, thats why im confused because the threads are saying two different things with hooking up diffs together and running into snorkel/airbox.

That's one of the problems, people will have different opinions.

My opinion is air box is fine, and joined together is fine as long as the breather isn't too restrictive.

Saying that though, my breathers don't run to the air box, they're joined together and run to a single fuel filter. Have been that way for over five years now.

Teeing the breathers together is fine, but I Personally wouldn't connect them into the airbox. The engine sucks air in, so the air intake is always going to be under vacuum. With the breathers plumbed into the airbox you will be creating a vacuum in the diffs/gearbox etc. This will allow water to suck in past the seals, making the effort of extending diff breathers pointless.

If there's that much vacuum in the air box there would have to be some significant problems with air box design/flow.

If the breather caps operate properly they result in a vacuum in the diff housings too. The volume of air we are talking is tiny.

The factory caps on both my GV and Pajero flow air in both directions - I don't see how that would result in a vacuum.

thanks for the replies, im going to t the diffs together. im thinking that there isnt going to be a problem with running into the air box or snorkel but i might ring a diff place and ask the question just in case... im going to be using 1/8th trans cooler hose or something close to that.

I think you're over complicating it.

Its just a hole in the top of the diff so that with heating up and cooling down of the air inside the diff its got somewhere to go.

We are talking about the TINIEST amount of air movement through that diff breather. Abosulutely miniscule.

All you are trying to achieve with the breather extension hoses is to get the hole above water level when you take the diff swimming, doesnt really matter where it goes as long as its a higher up than before.

One thing to note, dont run the hose so that it has a low point in it, oil vapour can condense and potentially pool in this low point and block the movement of this minisucle amount of air.
