I picked up a '90 Vitara with a 2' body lift I'd like to remove, and I'd like to get the parts together for the job. I haven't seen the job done so I'd like to find out how many of which particular length bolts, are there stock rubber shims etc. How many jacks and jack stands are required, what are suitable jack points? What is the preferred sequence, and are there any potential snags etc. Thanks |

Before you start thinking about how to do it, make sure it's even possible. Some people have been known to cut down the captive studs that attach the major mounting points. If this has been done, you won't be able to remove the lift without fabrication and a major hassle. Maybe post a couple of photos of the mounts? I think there are only 4 body mount bolts that need to be replaced with shorter ones. The bigger issue is what's been cut/modified to lift the bumpers. I'd be taking some photos, and maybe removing the bumpers to work out what's been messed with before you fully commit. It might get a bit complex |

The first pic shows what is repeated at the 8 mounting points, a hard plastic 50mm spacer on top of the light coloured rubber bush. In the last pic it looks like some kind of trim inserted into the gap which would be left buy the lift. It's only 45mm but maybe if the side mount bolts of the bullbar were loosened and the slots were large enough, could the bar rotate forward on the tube mount and clear the body when its dropped? Is there a welded in captive nut that these body mount bolts screw into, or is it a nut and washer on the other side? Thanks |

Thanks If it's a proper kit it should have some female bolts which bolt up onto studs on the body which it might be. If this is the case you still need to rework the bumpers to get them to suit the 2" drop back to standard. From the pics - that bullbar has been cut and re-welded to suit the body lift. The rear bumper will probably have something done to it also if it matches up with the body. The plastic bit between the bullbar and the body in the last pic is just part of the standard grill. |

Why are you needing/wanting to remove it? The level it has been done at, it would seem more of a hassle to take it out than leave it be. If you plan on wheeling it and putting bigger tyres on it then the BL will help heaps with that even if its only mild. You can keep the stock suspension and have bigger tyres or even just 1in spacer (if you are worried about a 2in suspension lift being too high) and it would be pretty good off road. low and fat is the new tall. |

Ok. Are the light coloured rubber pieces retained in their current position? Do the studs protrude through far enough for washers and a nylock, or are shorter female bolts used? What size/thread? So remove bumpers then proceed, anything else to look out for? Thanks |

Yes, low and fat is where I'm going. At the moment its high and tippy (3" Calmini, 2" BL, 31" tyres, no sway bars, stock track width) Not to mention I have to carry my second spare and fuel cans on the roof rack! I'm going to Cape York in a couple weeks before the wet comes, so I'd to get it a bit more sorted before I go. |
