Hi all, I picked up a new sierra on Friday and we took it out on the weekend. Everything was great except I couldn't get it into 4low. Is there a trick to it or would the problem be deeper? Thanks in advance for any feedback Cheers Pete |

No trick,it just a push forward,mine is very easy between high & low range but doesn't want to go back into 2WD once you select 4WD,can take 5- 10 mins. of jigggling to get it back. Sorry i can't be of assistance but there is obviously something wrong with your TC. |

Mine did that because the stick bent and would hit on the square cutout in tunnel before it selected low. Fix is to remove knob, boot and look down when trying to select low, if it touches the tunnel its bent. It can bend from forcing it into low or 2wd high. Put mine back into shape in a vice and a BFH. While its out lube up the cup it sits into. The split pin can be a pain to put back in. |

If the stick is having trouble moving left to right or back into 2wd try flexing it up on uneven ground. |

Sorry for the hijack (sort of) but this raises a couple of other issues. What you're describing is transmission wind-up. If it's hard to get the car out of 4WD, you've driven on a high traction surface for at least a little while, and there's lots of tension on the transfer main shaft (between the front and rear outputs) That's an indication you're probably not shifting out of 4WD soon enough. if the surface is hard enough to cause wind up, you don't need to be in 4WD (that's my guide) In fact, I don't recall the last time I used high range 4WD. I go straight from 2WD to 4WD low. I also don't like the way the car handles in high range 4WD - really dead and soggy steering response. Secondly, if you are having this problem, reverse and squirm the steering left to right as you back up. Keep reversing and squirming until it goes smoothly into 2WD. Just some ideas. Steve. |

Look where the transfer stick meets the transfer case, SJ80 will have the stick attached to an arm by split pin and it sits in a cup right at the end. SJ70 or ealier will go directly into the transfer (like a top loader gearbox). Its held in my a locking cap, spring and bush. You turn the cap and it pops off. |

My sj80 also struggles to get out of 4wd and keeps piping out of 4 low and does hit the top of the cut out. I now know that my gear stick is bent and know how to fix it thanks but is this a problem all sj80s have ? |

The transfer stick could be bent, possible from forcing it to hard forward. You need to remove it from above and bend the stick backwards in a vice. Re fit and see if it still hits the square cut out in the tunnel. Put some grease in the cup and ball on the end of the stick. |
