Post subject:  vitara gearbox options?
The gearbox in my 97 swb vitara started making a loud clicking/grinding noise when in 2nd. I have been told that the syncro might be the problem and that a rebuild or new gearbox might be the best option. Ive pulled the gearbox out and also brought a new clutch kit cause ive read on here when removing the gearbox to work on it its best to replace the clutch at the same time. Would i be better off buying a rebuild kit and rebuilding the gearbox myself ? (Not sure how long this would take?) Buying a secondhand gearbox ? Or paying a professional to fix it ?

As a general rule, yes it makes sense to replace the clutch if you have the gearbox out anyway - saves doing all that work again when it does wear out. Ditto the rear main seal on the motor.

As for what your best option is, it depends on a lot of things:
- how good are you mechanically? It sounds a bit like a "if you have to ask you shouldn't be doing it" situation, but I don't want to assume that. (and I rarely live by that myself ;) )
- what do you have more of, time or money?
- are you prepared for the possibility that if you mess it up it will likely cost even more to fix?
- are you willing to take the gamble that a second-hand gearbox is an unknown quantity and may have the same issues 6 months down the track?

im not a wizz mechanically, especially when it comes to gearboxes. however i have a mate thats a mechanic that said he will give me a hand to do it if i can find a workshop manual for the car. I have more time then money, ( gotta love apprentice wages :wink: )
now that ive found a mate that has good mechanical knowledge to give me a hand my next question is where to get a rebuild kit from and approximately how much are they ? and also is there a website to download a manual on rebuilding gearboxes for a vitara ?

ive sent the guys at low range offroad a message a few days ago asking whether the gearbox rebuild kit will fit a 2.0 litre 4 cyl 1997 vitara. they havent replied yet, so does anyone on here know if it will fit ? ive been looking for kits in australia and have only been able to find a couple that come without syncros for $426 compared to the $199 kit from lowrange with syncros included.

The LROR guys are always pretty busy, so they can take a few days to reply. They are generally pretty good at answering questions and helping out with international stuff.

That said a couple of people have had issues, so if you don't hear in a week or so give them another nudge.

the rebuild kit from LROR came today but they told me that the manual they sell doesnt include anything on the gearbox rebuild. does anyone know where i can get a manual for rebuilding a gearbox ?

The FSM is what you need. Someone will post a link to a site where you can download it.

Fsm is the factory service manual isnt it ? Wohld be a big help if someone could post a link. Ill have a look on google and see what i can find. Thanks

Ive been told that i need a new countershaft for my gearbox. Ive rang around all the local parts shops and wreckers and a week later im still waiting for them to get back to me with a price. Are countershafts hard to find or am i just getting stuffed around by the locals ?

Doubt you'll find anyone willing to go the effort to remove one. Probably end up cheaper and easier to buy a whole box and swap it.
