Post subject:  front end squeaking noise?

Have noticed a squeaking noise coming from the front of the car. sounds like it is coming from the area around the gear stick.. The noise gets faster with speed and is only there in the forward gears.

I have checked and cleaned the front brakes and checked the wheel bearings.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Tom

Try removing the boots around both shifters to see if you can locate the noise better

Went for a decent drive yesterday and today, the noise seemed to disappear over time, then i hit a decent hole on a dirt track and it came back much louder.. will get under and grease up the unis and see what happens.

Does it sound like a piece of tin scraping?

Yea well at high speed it just sounds like a fast scuffing noise. Also forgot to mention it started a few days after going through a sandy bog hole and i didn't get a chance to hose it down till a week later

Well it may not be what I'm thinking, But get under there and have a look at the transfer case.
Have a look at the dust covers (Not sure on their proper name) behind the flanges and see if they are sitting flat.

This was where I was getting a high pitch scraping noise, You can see the one on the left has been touching.

I've exaggerated the left one in this pic, But it gives you an idea on what to look for.

See if you can push the cover flat against the flange.

Cheers mate. crawled under and had a look and they are all good, put in a recon rockhopper transfer case not long ago so the flanges were checked before going back on.

Drove around town today with the shifter boot off today and it hasn't made the noise since.. Arrgghh!

Just trying to iron out any little bugs left with the Zook before our cape trip later this year.

Have finally found the noise. gave the speedo cable from the transfer case a wiggle and it made that noise! pretty stoked its nothing too bad. have also noticed the speedo needle bouncing around . i take it these are the signs of a dying speedo cable?

Bouncing speedo needle is a good indication the cable is binding up. I'd replace it ASAP.
