Post subject:  Gearing questions for 1.0 maruti

Hey guys. I have a 4 speed maruti. It sucks sitting on 90kmh max and considered a 5th gear added to the box. Then after some research I have read that a 6.5 transfer may help with road gearing. Then I have also read the opposite. I want to put 29" to max 30" muddies in most likely 29s though. To confuse things I have also just purchased complete widetrack diffs for it which means I have diff gearing options also. Can someone help me shed some light on what combination of transfer gears and 29 - 30" tyres would be best suited to onroad travel while gaining the best crawl ratio off-road as I enjoy steep technical driving. Obviously if I can try and use either my nt or new wt diff centres I already have it would be better. Or do I just drop a 5th gear in it and say 4.9 transfer gears ? Any help would be great. I am not interested in motor changes. The one I have is as fresh as they come.

Thanks in advance.

the first question is why can you not do 100? yes it might be revving 4600 but it will do it right?

my mates lj runs 5000rpm + at 100 but sits there happily. these motor love reving

3.7 wide track diffs will bring that down to 4000rpm at 100 but will bring your already shit crawl ratio down from 32:1 to 29 :1

6.5s will make your revs at 100 worse bringing it up to 4800rpm but will give you a respectable 83:1 crawl if you ad a 5th gear to this you get around 3800 at 100 which is pretty nice.

on 30s 80:1 crawl is probably a bit low but if you use 2nd or even 3rd offroad aswell it gives you a nice low crawl gear

Ok. Thanks for the input. So is that 3800 roughly with 6.5's , 3.7 wt centres and a fifth gear on say 30s?! I got some work cut out. But really want to achieve this. Thanks again. I have owned a few suzys now and struggle with the myth of them loving to rev as the noise it makes nearly brings a tear I my eye

that's with the stock 4.1 diffs

3.7s bring it down to 3400 and raise your crawl ratio to 75:1

Ok. So what I have gathered is I can probably retain the 4 speed, put on 29s with the 3.7 diff gears and 6.5s and still have better on road manners than what I currently have ?

with that setup you will run 4500rpm at 100 so pretty much the same revs you have now

IMO reducing the highway revs isn't the answer, you'll run out of power to pull the higher speeds with the larger muddies. I've tried that and it wasn't great. I say put the muddies on and see where you want to move your gearing then and don't be scared of revving it. :)

With the stock F78-15 tyres you've got 4966rpm @ 100 with a 32.364 crawl ratio.
With stock gearing and 30s you get 4519@100 and obviously, again a 32.364 crawl
Stock gearbox+diffs, 4.9s and 30s 4659 and 62.756
As above with 6.5s 4840 and 83.752
6.5s, 3.727s and 30s 4389 75.948
4.9s stock diff gears, 5 speed (0.864 5th, there's a 0.794 5th version but it's much rarer) and 30s 4026 73.082
6.5s, stock diff gears, 5 speed and 30s 4181 97.533

Add 4ish% more revs for 235/75r15s (29.8").

The 5 speed conversion has the double advantage of not only having an over drive gear but it has a lower 1st gear too. Having said that IMO 4 speed ratios are much nicer to drive, the ratios are quite close and evenly spaced where as the 5 speed has quite a big gap between 1st and 2nd.

If you're planning to run the WT diffs you wont be able to run the NT diff gears in them.

FWIW I also have an F10a in my LJ and it cruises at 5900rpm @ 110. It's happy doing that for hours on end, wont lose speed up all but the steepest hills and will pull past where the needle stops moving on an LJ (140ish) but BYO earmuffs.

As you've got a Maruti that ran F78s (27.4") stock, 235/75r15s would actually be legal in most states depending on what other lift you have. :)
