Hey guys, Finally bought a 2000 Grand Vitara. The owner said it had sat for 1.5 months without being run and now it has a ticking noise coming from the front of the motor which is constantly there. it's quite a loud tick and doesn't seem to get louder with revs increase. The speed of the tick gets faster with the revs but will pretty much disappear when they get to a certain rpm. I drove the car 1.5 hours on the highway hoping that a good run would sort the issue out but it didn't. As soon as I got the car home, i gave it an oil change it desperately needed. When i put the Nulon engine flush in and started her up, the tick had completely disappeared after 2 minutes of running. Unfortunately, that quietness was short lived. Once I changed the oil(repco) and oil (5-30 full synthetic) the noise instantly returned and I cannot get it to quieten down. I bled the lifters as per the bulletin, 2000rpm for 20 minutes but that made no difference. I also added some Nulon stop tick to the oil but I am yet to run the car as now i am concerned that it might be the timing chain and if it is, the noise is constant so it could be very close to letting go? I tried to but a stethoscope today but i couldn't find one. Any input would be greatly appreciated...how I can identify the cause? Should i drive the car and see if the stop tick additive works? |

Kate's gv started to get a timing chain tick, i done a service and was still there so just gave it a good rev to 6500 twice and that clicked the chain tensioner over and no more noise |

I read something about giving it a good rev but never understood how it works? Know my luck mine will jump a tooth haha |

Yeah constant tick got worse under load, i'm not sure how it works but i remember Steaky said something about it years ago so i gave it a go and it worked |

I gave it a bit of a hard time on the way to work this morning (didn't thrash it but I didn't baby it like it did yesterday) when I got to work the noise had disappeared. I won't count on it being fixed till after a few days but this is the first times its been quite on its own, so fingers crossed. I wish I had of waited to put the "stop tick fluid" in because now I'll have no idea what cured it. |

UPDATE! So it seems like it is a timing chain rattle. Since driving it, the noise has now become much quieter (still very noticable) but much quieter then it was. The noise now disappears once the cars warmer. Anyone wanna help me change the timing chain !

What brand oil filter are you using? I've found some brands (eg. Ryco) can make the rattle sound a lot worse. Genuine Suzuki filters seem to be best. |

Use a genuine filter on the H-series engines. |

Could do. When I was using Ryco (they've since changed the fitment) there were two different construction oil filters they sold under the same part number. One was sort of okay, the other gave rattling for an extended period of time. Then I was using K&N and they were better. Last change I used the genuine filter (it was cheap too) and it does seem to be quieter. The wife normally drives it from a cold start - so I haven't heard that yet, but warmed up it was the quietest it's ever been. (Note: I have electric thermofans so any rattling is very obvious.) |

Mate i wouldn't be to worried about a little rattle when it's cold, just swap that filter over to a gen suzuki one (less then 20 bucks) and change ya oil every 5000 kms Built4thrashing had the same issue Built4thrashing wrote: gregdixon wrote: I give it a good high rpm high load run. Takes about 10 minutes of hard running when it's already warm. I would leave it if it went away sooner |

Little OT I guess but still relivant I think; My experiences with oil filters Ryco --> ticked like a barstard for up to 10 seconds when cold starting, sometimes when warm starting Another brand (came in a 4wd Products filter kit, can't recall the brand name) --> ticked for a up to 10 seconds on cold start when getting close to oil change time, warm starts were OK. AC Delco --> No ticks to speak of when cold or warm starting. Maybe the odd "tick tick" and that's it. |
