Hi, I've got a 97 stockman I've been working on over the past 12 months, and have run into a small issue..

The issue being the f10a under the bonnet. The lack of power is really starting to get to me

So I was looking around, and a 4agze is within my budget for a power upgrade, but would I be able to get it engineered and legal in qld?

I was also looking at a gti engine swap, but the engines are a similar price up here, and if I could, I'd prefer the extra power, since I want to move up to 33s etc

And what gboxes would be a good fit?
I've heard the t50s are too long?

Any input would be greatly appreciated people
Cheers

I believe the GZE can be legally fitted it QLD.

No, there basically isn't a suitable gearbox. The Toyota 5speeds are too long and the three speed Corolla auto won't take the power.

Personally, I would not go with an engine of this weight or torque- you will find the driveline won't like the power and you'll be on a slippery slope of upgrades/ rebuilding to make it reliable.

Tyre size has little to do with engine power. Tyre size is a gearing issue.

Steve.

Cheers for the info, given me a few things to consider

Outta curiosity, how have people gotten the 4a engine into sierras?
Just shortened and lengthened shafts, and put up with vibration etc?

Shorten the jackshaft and deal with reduced uni-joint lifespan and poor shifter location.

I didn't consider the shifter being moved back..

Cheers for the info. I'm thinking the gti engine will end up being a lot less headaches

Yes but then you'll have the power in the wrong place for an offroad car.
G16b for the win.

+2 for g16b. 4agze's seem to be becoming popular again, I dont know why. Wheeling is the only motor sport you spend money on to go slower. You want torque and reliability.

Save the cash from the hassle of the 4agze, put a g16b in and buy some reduction gears. Will be everything you need.

gti and the 4a swap are just about the crappest two engine swaps I can think of.

g16 is heaps. but if you want more look at the J20a motor.

So apart from the torque issue, what's the big downsides to the gti swap?
I figured it would work better for me since I rally alot. Most of the tracks I run are really good for it. I've got one track at the back of my house is like a 20km uphill wrc stage

And otherwise I'm mainly doing hill climbs etc, not a lot of rock crawling up this way

In that case, the gti swap would probably be fun. A small-tyred sierra with a gti engine that makes all of its power at the top end would be tonnes of fun on that sort of terrain.

Fuck the gti go a 13b turbo.

Yeah nah, I couldn't afford to fuel a rotary... Be fun tho

I'm not 100% yet, but definitely leaning towards the gti motor.
Fairly cheap, fairly easy to fit, seems to be boost friendly..

And should have enough power to spin 33s on the highway to get to some of the more challenging tracks...

G16b is all of the above and more.

A stock 1.0litre has enough power to drive 33s on the highway - provided you've corrected the gearing to suit the larger tyres.
Don't attempt to substitute power for incorrect gearing as it is a solution that never works.

Yeah I definitely agree. Gearing is the next big upgrade for me, after the engine conversion.
I'm guessing the main thing I'm wanting is the extra power for overtaking, not having to drop gears all the time going up hills etc

My mates hilux used to drive me insane, it was decent off road, but an absolute pig on any incline

Wait up, a g16 is boost friendly?
The research I've done seems to suggest that's not the case... Any input you could give me on that would be greatly appreciated

You r3minded m3 of something. Somewhere at home i hav an old Zoom mag where was a rally driver with a vitara. Made a turbo engine out of all factory parts. He used an na crank with the gti head as it gave him a lower compression for the turbo. Would be about 1995 zoom.

"Overtaking without dropping gears" - that's torque. A g16b makes almost 30% more torque than a g13B. A g13b has such a high power and torque band that you're definitely going to be dropping gears to overtake because you need to get the revs up.

If you're "rallying around" and driving on road look at a Vitara. Much more stable and potentially handle much better with a much lower centre of gravity.

Yeah but I already have a stockman. And I do 4by a fair bit, its just not the only thing I'll be doing.. And having a trayback is quite handy, considering how far I live out of town

But yeah, you guys have given me a lot to think about. I'll definitely look into the g16 a bit more, definitely seems the more sensible solution

Well, I searched for both engines for weeks, and have found a g13b for 1500, so g13b it is

Cheers for the help people
