Hi there, I have a Vitara 92 manual 5 speed and the shifter has a extreme amount of slop in it (almost like it is in neutral when in gear) I have heard about people replacing 2 bushings that apparently fixes it ? any help would be greatly appreciated, if the bushings is all I need to fix this where can I get them ? and where can I get the lower shifter boots for the gearbox and transfer case ? Myron at http://www.zuksoffroad.com/ has a brass shifter bushing (it is called a "G-string" and does not appear in the online catalog right now - call for availability) for the Mk 1 Vitara/Sidekick 5-speed transmission. Also available is a brass version of the plastic "biscuit" ( http://www.zuksoffroad.com/Biscuit-5-speed-trans-remote-bal-tip-bushing_p_1591.html ) that fits on the end of the shifter. Both lasts forever, is inexpensive and costs nearly nothing to ship! I hope that this helps! |

Check that the two slots on the ball havent floged out. I had to weld the slots up and grind new ones on mine. The stick was twisting side to side |

At the same time, replace the bolt that centres the lever, and replace the transfer lever bush. bye |

Hope you get this fixed! When you do don't leave your hand on the stick as it will wear out the bottom of the selector and cause "slop" only gently change gear in manuals and never "race" the box and it will out live you!

Ok thanks for all the help and advice I will pull it apart and have a look tomorrow, does anyone know where I can get the transfer case inner shifter boot is it the same as the transmission boot ? is it worth replacing the bushes with the brass ones ? or just replace them with the stock replacements ? does the transfer case use the same bushes ? thanks for all the help everyone

Which boot are you referring to as the "inner"? Suzuki calls them #1 (on the transfer case or transmission) #2 (on the tunnel) and #3 (on the console - transmission only). The #1 boots are only available (from Suzuki) with the shift levers, which makes them ridiculously expensive - what I have been using is steering rack boots - I choose one where the "inner pleat" diameter matches the neck on the shifter, cut it down and tie-wrap it to the shifter housing - you need to lube the small end (dishwashing liquid works well) to slide it over the "fat" section of the shift lever. |

That is the #1 boot, but, what I find interesting is that Suzistore has it listed by a Suzuki part number - which means it is available separately from the shift lever, which is not how I recall it - I will have to recheck my parts catalogue. My apologies for the confusion - on the SE series Vitaras, the transfer case shifter boot is available separately, the transmission shifter #1 boot is not, my car is SQ series, on which neither is available separately. |

Vacuum or Air Compressor. Are you in Brisbane, I ask because I have a brand new Boot gearshifter I brought for my Vit but the old one was ok. |

This fix worked amazing thank you to all members involved I installed a Z.O.R lower bushing and a new upper bushing and a new transfer bushing fresh ixl grease and new rubber boots and it is like new |

I did this to mine as well as it was binding badly and made it hard to shift gears. I end up snapping the bottom one and replaced them all. It wasn't too expensive or difficult either and would recommend changing them if there is any play as it makes the car a lot better to drive
