Is it a good idea or even legal to maybe take a 30ltr tank from some sort of car/custom tank and strap it to a roof cage? I say 30ltrs because I would want treads and a shovel up there as well.

Heaps of people seem to have jerry cans on the roof and I think rhino even make a Jerry can holder for the roof. Is it leagle ? Who knows

I would say just buy a couple squat jerry cans and save yourself the effort and trouble of finding an old car tank or custom build it. How often would you realistically need to carry it around?

As for leagalities, from what I can tell, you are not able to have it attached to the side of the vehicle, or the front. It can be on the rear but must no protude too far (this seems vague, how far is too far? I would assume they would ping you if it was further then your bumper/spare tyre). Carrying it inside the car is a big no no more for fumes and leaks then anything else.
The roof appears to be legal.

However in saying that; you do have a Jimny, you don't want it to be a skyscraper so squat cans would be ideal.

I do not believe petrol can legally be carried on the rear of the car either. (As in on a swingaway/Jerry mount. )

well, its plastic, so it will last at least 7 years before UV degradation gets to the point that you might think about replacing it.
as for easy fill, you may need to open the main cap and use a syphon hose to actually fill the jimny tank at any reasonable rate. the outlets on these tanks are usually quite thin and are designed to be siped out of by a boat motor, not a speedy fuel transfer. but, if you got the tank new, and knew a guy with a plastic welder, you could have a larger threaded hole put in to tit 1/2 inch BSP fittings for example. that would make short work of a transfer.

gravity and a hand pump will be fine :) Moved my zook into a Nabors car port so have some height to fit a basket now! love keeping my aerial up now!
