Hi All, Been lurking for a while and am just about to buy a '90 Sierra. Just wondering how capable they are off road stock? I'm heading away soon and am not sure if I should bother taking it with me or waiting until I can afford some better wheels and a lift. I'll only be tackling a local fire trail that I've been on before, so nothing too extreme. I'm a complete novice when it comes to off roading though and this will be my first time as the driver. they are more capable stock than any other 4x4 that didn't come with diff locks from the factory. |

And in any case, a lift adds only very marginally to capability if at all. If you have time/funds to purchase a quality air compressor so you can let the tyres down for improved traction, and remove the front sway bar. These both make a substantial difference to capability. Steve. |

first sierra i bought back in what must have been the early 90's i think was, a stock hard top 1L with a blown head gasket i picked up for a couple of bucks from a mate who had a wrecking yard. fixed the motor and drove the hell out of it. because it cost me nothing i didnt care about destroying it so just went stupid in it and it amazed me just how much abuse it could take and what it could climb up and through. onto my 3rd sierra now, they are a hell of a lot of fun even out of the box. as long as you have someone else to pull you out, or at least a winch then id suggest trying anything in it. even stock they are really hard to get stuck anywhere. |

I think the biggest part about driving a stock sierra is learning how hard you can actually push them. They're surprisingly resilient and don't mind sitting around redline when you need to. After that, it's all about learning how to take advantage of the narrow track and short wheelbase on tracks where bigger 4wds have been previously. |
