Hi guys, my 18 year old daughter has had her first prang. A bit sooner than I had hoped.
The mechanic is saying repair it, her friends are saying write it off and she isn't sure who to listen to.

I said I'd look for some advice online. We've never had a Suzuki in the family, but my experience on Ford forums has been great. Sad that this is our first Zook post...

Anyway. Mechanic is estimating $3,000 (includes labour). It will also need about $1,000 of panel repairs.

I reckon given it's the front end, we can't say there won't be other problems down the track with wheel alignment and wobbles etc. I'm thinking it may be better to sell the car for $1,000 to some lucky young bloke, and start again with a car that has not been rebuilt. Tomorrow I will see the mechanic and update this post.

For now, what do you think - is it really that much to replace a front end kit for a Jimny 2001? She skidded on a bend, lost the rear end and the front right wheel went into a concrete gutter sideways, took the whole weight of the car at 30-40 kmh. Towing has already been $350. No insurance. Car cost $6,000, and has been beautifully taken care of.

Mechanic wants to use genuine parts as (a) wreckers in Brisbane have nothing at the moment, and (b) it is the front end and for a young driver, which I don't disagree with.

No, we could not do the work ourselves. Daughter and I both work, so we can find the money, or buy another Jimny that has not been rebuilt for $5,000.

What are your thoughts before I find out more?

In the absence of photos, what’s the replacement parts list? Why does it need panel work if it only hit the curb?

I’m unconcerned by panelwork- that’s purely cosmetic- I’m concerned about the mechanical parts quoted.

Part out, and get another car. Unless your daughter requires the jimny for what it is good for (light offroading) buy a more sensible and safe road car. The next prang might be her last, they are a shocking road car.
