HELP! - what should I do?

Post subject:  HELP! - what should I do?
My 2001 Jimny auto gearbox has died.
The gearbox specialist cannot find a replacement (nor can I)

Do I:
a) keep trying to find a replacement 'box?
b) let the wreckers buy the car for what I imagine is not much money?
c) break the car myself and sell the parts online?
d) any other options you can think of?

Have you got another car to use? I’d go with option A if there isn’t a strict time imperative.

Otherwise C. Definitely not B

Box isn't rebuildable? Rebuild kits for them are cheap from chinese sources, though it's been years since I've looked them up.

Manual conversion? Much more straight forward in your model than later ones as the rest of the gearing is the same.

Thanks. I have got another car, but I have been waiting 2 months already and have no idea how long this might take.

Thanks. Current box is well and truly knackered.
Manual conversion is something I am going to talk to my transmission specialist about, as I have been offered all the bits I need for the conversion from a suitable donor car. I just need to work out whether it is going to be worth all of the cost/hassle.

A 2001 Jimny is a $5-6,000 car, depending on what the rest of it is like.
As a wreck, $600-$1,000, depending on what the rest of it is like.
Very unlikely to be worth the cost / effort of converting to manual & you must have wanted an auto in the 1st place when you bought it.
Unless it is special to you, or modified that might make sense to continue with this particular car.
Keep an eye on Pickles or Manheim salvage auctions & try to buy a crashed, stat. right off that you could reasonably assume was driving ok before the crash, & get the auto from that.
Good luck with your hunting - there are a few Jimnys out there with stuffed autos, looking for a replacement so they get snapped up quick.
I've not tried, but apparently the rebuild option is expensive & not long lasting - pretty much a throwaway box when they fail.

According to the suzuki dealer I was at last week, the new generation jimny auto still uses the exact same box, so once more of those hit the roads and start crashing you might gain some new options.

i think zuzuki is on the money
rang up my contact who said , yeah, the boxes are problematic and exy, but can be fixed
unfortunately he quoted OOM $2.5-3.5k including fitting, which i think reflects the labour $s and the lack of aftermarket parts - so you have to buy branded assmeblies

Update - I have now bought all the parts to convert to manual from a member on here. It is with my mechanic who is looking very optimistic

With parts and labour it should cost me around $2k to get back on the road and I will have a $4-5k car, so I think this is worth doing, especially when the wreckers will only give me a couple of hundred $ss!
Yes, I really liked the auto box, especially on the beach, but now I know how troublesome they are, I am happy to let it go.

The dimensions of the box are very similar, but all of the electrics are subtly different, including the gearbox ECU. I can only use a gearbox from the 99-01 jimnys and most of these boxes are now long gone or highly prized.

That sounds like more effort than the manual conversion! lol

don't know about the maths - its around 2k whichever way you look at.
But thanks for sharing with the forum, i'm definitely having second thoughts on that auto jimny that i was looking at.
the boxes clearly have a lifetime around 200k, which is in the ballpark for all autos. except these are way expensive to rebuild

I don't know where you're getting that figure from Aircobra. Heat kills autos and Jimny autos run hot - it's not km that kills them. Pretty much nobody seems remotely interested in putting a temp gauge on their jimny auto so they have a chance of preventing failure.

My Jimny was up around 280k. Auto. I did a full fluid change (dropped the box and drained everything) and you could smell that the fluid had been burnt. Shifted and behaved fine. Did about 1000ks in it and moved it on. I wouldn't touch another Jimny auto.
