Hoping someone can clarify if my Vitara (G16B 16V EFI Jun 1992, ETD01V, JSAETD01V00114282) should have a working engine check light? It has the globe in the console but has never worked in the 5 years I have owned it. Also does any one know where I can find a wiring diagram, the one I have and the ones I keep finding online are different to my model. Feedback appreciated |

IF your car has EFI, then it should have a check engine light that turns on when the ignition is switched on, and usually goes out after the engine is started. You can try the link below for manuals, I don't guarantee any of them will match your vehicle, having said that, you need to be aware that Suzuki was in the habit of releasing manuals for the base models, and then releasing supplements as models were updated. so you may require the base manual as well as one or more supplements. http://www.rhinoman.org/manuals/vitara/vit_manuals.html |

Yes, your car has a CEL. As fordem describes, it should light on ignition "on" an go off shortly after the engine has started. (2 seconds or so) The light is in the instrument cluster, not the console and it's quite possible the globe has simply failed at 29 years of age. The CEL is a simple circuit - it's fed with 12V ig+ve and the ECU grounds the circuit to turn the light on. This is the way the ECU manages most outputs. It's unlikely you'll find a wiring diagram that EXACTLY matches your model, The donor for my Sierra was a 1992 EFI LWB Vitara, and I have a factory Vitara manual with all the supplements (the supplement for the 5 door as almost as big as the whole manual for the 3 door car). I was unable to find a wiring diagram that exactly matched my car, even with the complete factory manuals. The best fit I found was the Saudi Arabian market model, as it didn't have daytime running lights or other weirdness. The service manual contains a procedure to put the ECU into diagnostic mode, which lights the CEL with the engine running. On my car, I've fitted a switch to enable this without fiddling around with a paperclip on the side of the road, but if the globe has blown, this won't help. If you're sure the globe is intact, it might be a way of helping to troubleshoot the circuit. |

Thanks for your responses… after considerable time I have finally got around to pulling the instrument cluster out in attempt to finally resolve this (hopefully). After removing the instrument cluster I have discovered the CEL has no globe or any sort of electrical connect, but I can see the check engine writing if I shine a torch into the instrument cluster. I can also see there doesn’t appear to be VSS connections. I have wired a CEL light temporary by tapping into its wire in the wiring loom behind the cluster. I’m wondering if the instrument cluster has be swapped with a different model like a non EFI? Can any confirm or have any other suggestions. Thank in advance |

Yes, it’s possible the cluster was swapped for a carby cluster, I guess. |

Sorry for the delay, yes, that is a carb cluster. No VSS or CE light |
