Post subject:  lockable tie downs.
What brands are out there?

I can only find the brand http://kanulock.com/ looking around $80 for a pair.

Will be spending 4 days later in the year in sydney with all camping kit on the car, I like to slow down the lowlifes at least a little.

Any other suggestions?

Chain and padlock can work well if items are able to be secured in such a way, atleast that's what i try to do when travelling around...

Edit: Could also try and get one of those canvas bags for a cargo rack... can at least lock it... keeps things out of sight is generally the best plan, same goes for in gear kept in the car :)

Apparently Thule do these straps too. Although I haven't seen any local suppliers with them.

If you're really concerned with all the dodgy people that live in Sydney you could make up some stainless steel straps the right length for what you need from say 3mm - 5mm cable and crimp eyelets big enough to fit a pad lock.
But at the end of the day you're just going to slow them down, if they want your stuff they will get it.

Safest thing is just cover it properly and don't leave anything tempting in open sight.

Understand I'm just slowing em down, the idea is the car beside mine is easier/quicker... not to stop it from going missing.

Thanks, will look at the thule straps to. With any luck I can get em at wholesale. Not much of the stuff is easily lockable and why have two steps when packing up/moving on when you can have 1 ;)

Usually a small card table, a tent (oztent malamoo3) couple of chairs, and this trip most likely a duffel bag or two with clothes.

The only thing that would be painful to replace is the clothes. The rest is just a massive inconvenience and a few $$$ With any luck we end up in a house and not a hotel while we're in town and then it's not so much an issue.

Would still like the option for peace of mind.

I was thinking that also, but tables unless small wont fit . And depending on amount and size of the chairs, they might be a problem.

I liked that idea till I did the maths - 4 x decent padlocks = $40+ plus another $20 to rekey them at best... back to the tiedowns.

Keep the suggestions coming, I'm liking the different idea's.

I have one of these... they are a massive pain to setup take like 5min to setup and are pretty unstable compared to your average table.... I ended up finding one from kmart recently for ~$20 which is a good size and fits nicely on the roof in cargo basket

I have one that takes about ten seconds to set up - you simply "open" it like you would a camp chair, and then roll out and clip on the aluminium slat table top.... and done.

mines a big one like 900x1200 or something and it only take like a min to set up.
its heaps stronger then a card table would be.

I like this for packability.

In the end, I purchased 'kanulock'

seemed the best (almost only) product that will slow scum down.

They look good for locking things to a cargo rack but they don't seem to have any sort of ratchet design so not soo great for securing heavy items in place I guess?

Just got them. 68 delivered off ebay seller waterfunman - not so much a tiedown, more a soft lockable strap. (needs to be looped back onto itself)

Good product for what it's designed for - perfect for my use - keeping a mates tent safe and another mates rooftop safe (or at least make it harder for the not so determined theives)

$68 isn't bad, that's only about double normal price for reasonable tie downs anyway.

I might look at getting a set for the kayak so I can load up the night before and not have to worry about some scumbag yoinking the damn thing off the roof racks.
