Well, the original clutch has finally failed, as I expected it would given what I am making it do.

I have to choose an appropriate replacement. So, I would like to know how the hardness of the clutch material and the pressure of the pressure plate is meaured/stated so I can make an informed choice. Are these specs offered by manufacturers, or are they stated somehow else.

Knowing that, I'd like to know what the original Jimny specs are, and what other options are available.

I want to end up with a clutch that is harder wearing and more solid but without making the clutch pedal too hard and breaking cables etc.

I guess this is all pretty standard stuff but having never played with clutches before, I'm to learn.

Have you thought of a new standard clutch and transfer / diff gearing? Heavy duty clutches are heavy

I have thought of transfer/gearing, but can't afford what it would cost to do it right for a Jimny. Any Sierra case swap would make major changes to high as well as low, which I don't want. And I kinda don't want to go backwards uisng old Sierra parts.

Re clutch - not looking to overdo the 'Heavy Duty' for reasons already known, just an improvement.

im running a npc clutch that was custom built to have alot of clampage but does effect the pedal too much. its only slightly heavier. i love the clutch such an improvement over the standard one with 235's.

I don't know if a heavy duty clutch is going to make a massive difference.

I would guess that the most damage being done to your clutch is not it slipping when you are using maximum clamping pressure (i.e. fully engaged) but rather when you are having to slip it more when taking off, or off road etc...

A heavier duty clutch will ultimately give you more available friction, but I doubt it will hold up much better to the slipping that you are still going to have to use due to inappropriate gearing...

Thats my $0.02 anyway, others may disagree...

Ok, well I have done some more research
Vehicle - Suzuki Jimny VVT 08.
Exedy...
SZK7245 - Standard Clutch (Factory equivalent) Repco on Acct $425
SZK7245HD - 25% more clamp with same pedal pressure. Repco on Acct $260

Clutch Industries. Repco says they are a generic brand but are generally better than the factory unit.
Standard - Repco on Acct $115
Heavy Duty - None available.

So, I might just have to go the CI option for now till I can afford a nice Exedy!

EDIT: Just double checked with repco. The price quoted on the CI was an old clearance special. Actual price is $195+freight.

A clutch isn't something you can cut corners on. I promise you WILL burn it out in a short time frame considering the way you drive, and your lack of gearing.

Do yourself a favour and pay for the exedy.

Chances are NPC could build a clutch for the type of abuse you will put it through... Since thats what they do.. There standard HD units are well under $300 either way. Ive used them in a few vehicles and loved the abuse they could take.

Have done a lot of research today.

For an Exedy, my best option is an NPC modified. They take a standard Exedy clutch, which they keep in stock, and modify it to give 40% extra pressure with no change to the pedal. At $302, this is by far the moset economical way to go for the best results.

I might take a trip down there once I have it all out.

I put a s/h clutch in my sierra. Its a korean made pos that was brand new on the second car i bought. While it has done the job that its made for, it is faaaar from what i would say a clutch is supposed to do. I use low range 2wd every morning to get out of my driveway and and i feel the clutch slip every morning. "Normal" driving on the road is fine, but the second that i want more from the car, it slips, lags, and carries on like a cranky misses once a month. I only put it on because i had the gearbox out for another reason and the excedy clutch i had in the car was pretty close to shagged and it was a sunday arvo and i was short of money to replace the flywheel ring gear, starter motor AND clutch on said sunday arvo. I have had the bugger in for 6 months now and when i get over the surgury and working again, i will be pulling the gearbox out again and putting and exceedy in. If you are able to put the clutch in yourself (and save the $$ on labour), put the best one in you can. DO IT ONCE AND DO IT PROPER! If you are struggling to change the clutch, i can guarentee that someone on this website can drop around one evening to give you a hand, group of top blokes (and some top lasses too!) here :D
Just my opionion!
Dave

bohuler, I agree completely with your methodology of 'Do it once, Do it right'. Thats how I approach everything I do. Will have to see how work is over the next couple of weeks. Gotta replace the air con compressor in my van before summer hits to (Ironically, because the clutch plate has come off teh front of it). Not cheap in the Merc :(

Put some gears in it then, rather than fixing something that isn't the problem ;)

what improvement to clutch life do you think this extra clamping pressure will give? do you currently have trouble with the clutch slipping under load with your foot completely off the pedal?

no, I didn't think so

Well it kinda IS the problem... I don't have a working clutch.
And, as previously mentioned, if I could afford gearing, I would have done that ages ago because i am well aware of the need. So I just gotta do what I can when I can.

Wayne, what people are trying to tell you is that extra clamping pressure isn't what you need.
Extra clamp will just make the pedal heavier.
Your clutch is wearing quickly because you have to slip it to get moving due to having no reduction gearing.

The act of slipping the clutch is reducing the clamped pressure on it.

My zook has the cheapest standard clutch I could find/fit and it has never slipped or burnt out.
If I were you I fit a new clutch and not go offroad till I'd made some gearing corrections to transfer or diffs or whatever works in a Jimny.

That could be a while. As I have said - the way I want to do it is quite costly. The difference between the cheapest clutch at $195 and an Exedy at $215 and an NPC at $302 makes the difference neglible.

NPC and ohers have said it will make little to no difference to pedal to the pedal.

In any case, I haven't made any decisions, still tossing up my options till I get the clutch out which won't be till next week.

If I could get a S/H 20% trialjimny T-case kit for chips, I'd do that sooner rather than later, just haven't seen any.

Knowing how rare they are, I wouldn't count on finding a second hand trial jimny gear set........or if you did, I imagine it would be on the upper side of expensive. :?

Indy, Thanks for your support, but I think I will forever have that stigma because I don't treat it like its my daily drive, and I don't, because it isn't.

Well you saw. I followed 33" tyres and was only ever let down by clearance and gearing, (oh and a lack of fuel last time :P )

Without changing the T-case back to a stick, and maybe even the gearbox, I'll be waiting till I can afford the APIO gears I think... Next month :)

And yes, I agree, need a decent clutch. I will likely either go the standard Exedy or the NPC custom, based on andrew88's experience.

Sweet thanks man :) Yeah Tax man has come as he does but once a year, so SOME people are spending. This week has been excellent, and a bit lined up this coming as well. I guess you'd be finding the same?

After consideration, and discussing with NPC, I decided on the modded Exedy and picked it up today. I'll put it in tomorrow if I get a chance.

If nothing else, It won't burn every time I do a quick change on the road.

Also got the flywheel machined, and 2 bearings replaced.
