Yes they are different, not by much but enough to cause trouble.
You should be able to use 1.6 CVs, but you'll need a 26 spline driver's side by the sounds of it.

Just an update. Managed to source a 26 spline short shaft. It supposedly came from a GV but i know that cant be right as it fit in there perfectly unlike the original 26 spline GV half shaft that came with it. I guess for anyone else reading this the best thing to do is to take your 22 spline short shaft to the wrecker and find a 26 spline variant that is shorter. That's what i did and it seemed to work. Just got to source a 26 spline drivers side cv from a 1996 vitara and Im all set to go 4 wheeling. Woot. Thanks for everyone's help.

when i thought i done my front diff i hadnt, all i done was broke the left have side axel, but i gotta steelie and a locker, wouldnt change a thing!

Finally got it all back together. Just went and did some 4wd at last. Fuark its a good thing the front locker is lockable at the press of a switch. If it where full time it'd be such a pain in the ass to drive. Ended up using a 26 spline cv shaft from a SV420. It worked so meh that's all I cared about. Apparently there 5mm longer than a SE416.
