I have done this, top, bottom and both sides, sides are wider and force more air towards the radiator.

IMO its a must no matter you use a clutch fan or thermo.

More air, more better.

yep, royce is on the money.

on one of my mk1 cortina's with a worked motor it only ran a pissy 2 blade unshrouded mechanical fan which was enough for sitting in traffic & around town. dad had fabbed up 2 alloy ducts/shields either side of the radiator filling the gaps from the inner guards to radiator which channelled air into the radiator at speed. it was that effective you could run the car for hours at highway speed with no fan, just the water pump & force fed air.

it was that effective on a 42+ degree day fuel would start vapourising due to under bonnet temps before it even came close to getting warm.

i've done similar sort of thing to my vitara once bodylifted there were gaps everywhere around the radiator & either side of the engine bay, my thoughts are the factory have put countless hours in getting air to pass thru the radiator & out & under the footwells/trans tunnel, i filled the gaps around the radiator with thin rubber sheeting, above the radiator/rad support panel & the front section of the engine bay to the strut tower trying to replicate the original air flow path from the factory.

I just installed a Vit fan today. Nice and easy.
All I had to do was slightly round out the drivers side holes on the shroud, so I could move it over slightly. Other than that, perfect fit!

Here's the fit fan on left, with my old Sierra fan after it met some water on the Balfour Track
