Post subject:  Welding sierra diffs?

pulled the centers out of our n/t diffs today to put into a set of w/t diffs and i was going to weld bup the rear one befor i put it in but when i got it out it looks nothing like any open center diffs i have seen infact i could have sworn it has a lsd in it and the front center is the same.

so question is are these an open diff? and how do i go about locking/welding them?

please see pics of the diff center below.

Looks normal to me also. Follow one of the many guides on the net when taking it apart (marking everything etc) so you can put it back together again without having to get the backlash reset etc.

Can't say I've welded a diff before but I assume its just the spider gears. Once you've cracked open the carrier you will get what you're looking for.

just pull all the spider gears out and clean all the oil off, then stick the side gear in four little gears, the shim's and the pin'sthen weld away, then stick the top side gear on and she won't be going anywhere... i welded a 2pin, not sure but i rekon thats abit harder as i wanted the internals removable so i couldreplace side gears if they broke :D

1-The first time i welded my rear. I welded the spider gears in sections, so they couldnt turn. Then they started ratcheting, worse and worse.

2- So i welded it again all solid trying to get everywhere possible with the mig, and make sure the last spider gear sits in perfect for the outer cap, i have come close to not being able to bolt the cover on..

I then smashed it in canberra, whole carrier blew, bearing pushed out the side, and snapped the long axle..had to replace whole housing as snapped axle was stopping centre from coming out..(a long sunday, thanks zooker&chef)

3- So i got another. Welded again. Still running since canberra.

ps. on 33x12.5s

Oh and i have about 3 twisted rear splines here.unsure if the one in suz is twisted also..

Mine exploded last w/end i think you really have to fill that sucka with as much weld as possible, welding sections doesnt work nor does using nuts and bolts in the mix. Mig will work best on a nice high ampere setting.

just weld the two little side gears to each side take the other ones out, but make shore u heat it be 4 u weld it and let it cool slowly it will last longer

Welded is cheap and it works, also it's nasty and illegal. When I welded mine I took out the side gears, preheated them and welded the teeth voids as in weld 2 leave 2 weld 2 leave 2. Only bad thing to happen to the carrier was the cap bolts would come loose. Twisted 2 axles (same cross section as Sierra) with a 2 stroke engine though. Another option is a Lockright which isn't as cheap but is nowhere near as nasty (or illegal).
