Post subject:  Stronger Diffs?

anyone have any info or knowledge about what bigger better stronger diffs are good for Sierras? Everyone does the Hilux diff swap, but i've also heard they aren't that great? I have seen MQ diffs and they are freakin huge, and also heard comments about how Nissan stuff is no good? How about Bundera diffs? I think they have the correct center offset? or landcruiser, which i guess would be huge as well?

I was leaning towards hilux diffs because they're not too massive, yet stronger than Sierra, and it's been doen 10 million times, so it can't be that bad?

I guess i'll go and search and sift the net.

I think MQ are seen as pretty good value both in cost and strength and should be easy to find (outside of Ipswich anyway)
I think they are also available in a decent ratio?
the front isnt a banjo style centre so replacing it is a lot harder, but you shouldnt need to I dont think
lockers are also only available for certain versions too I think

Hilux is obviously stronger than Sierra but plenty of people find the weak points and the prices are up there I think
Landcruiser have a stronger centre but the same CV's as a Hilux? so not really stonger

just get a pair of GQ diffs, mub4b has some :)

yer i don't think i'd be doing this anytime soon, but i'll keep an eye out for cheap parts. and yeah the extra cost of getting lockers for different diffs would be a bugger.... and if i got a welded front MQ diff i'd have to do all that hydro steer shit

I've got hilux diffs , with detroits , had no problems yet , but I still have my 1.3 motor. I've had no dramas so far and don't drive like an idiot. I've had it spinning on rock many times , all 4 wheels and with 4.88's and stage 4 gears , 35 mud terrains , at 16 psi , it spins them easy as , plenty of power , once my blower goes on i'll have even more torque for on road , I would recommend them any day as i know I can go out and not break the drive line anymore , also with extended wheelbase and extra width , much more stable ,Cheers Paul.

Steve how big are you wanting to go in treads? Carl is yet to do any damage to hilux gear and he is going pretty nuts on 35's these days. He often spins all 4 on rock, as MART has said, and everything is staying together...

waxxy, i think i'd like to keep things small, so maybe 32s or 33s. The 31s go pretty good at the moment. I'm just throwing a few ideas around as i'm not sure which direction to go. Cheap is always good, keeping with the tight arse zook theme :)

Post subject:  Re: Stronger Diffs?

maybe i should keep it all suzuki , just to go with the pure zook theme :)

anyone want to donate CVs?

if ya want cheap, easy, and bulletproof. go the mq's. they'll be cheap to buy and easy to fit, and if 33's are ya max, you'll never break em.

course the only downside is the centre clearance, but ya can always shave them a bit. i looked at building a 'streetable' sierra with mq's and 32in mongrels, no lift, and just the guard chopping...but already have too many toys

hilux diffs can be had cheap if ya not in a hurry. i got my complete rear for $10, and the front was $50 iirc. i paid a bit to get 5.29 centres, but ya might not intend to run something that low. an you've seen first hand the abuse they will hold up to

what ya all think about GQ diffs? too heavy? not enough clearance? I'd have to run 36s to equal the clearance of all the patrols around
