ok so there is no noise at all coming from the gearbox when the engine is running and the clutch is disengaged (pedal pressed in)
but when i engage the clutch (pedal let out) a definate whining spinning sound starts and it goes with the revs of the engine, not the speed of the car

anyone have any ideas of what it may be?

thanks, fletcher

x2 what mrw82 said
It won't be throughout bearing, it will only make a noise when foot is on the pedal. Sierra's have a weak spot it is where the input shaft joins with the main top shaft . It is a needle bearing . If let go too long it will wear the shaft and the housing on the end of other shaft. Much more costly to fix then.
Best to get all the bearings done in one hit then it is fixed.

Definately input shaft bearing...

Throwout can only make noise when clutch pedal is depressed.
