Hey Guys,

I need your help figuring out a suitable shock for the back end of my 99 Grand vitara!

Im running Ironman rear springs that provide 50mm of lift and spring rate is spot on for my rig it also has 15mm spring spacers to get it up to 2.5" of lift.

Now the issue is i need a shock with a 13" closed and 21.5 extended length to suit my set-up.

Im currently running doetsch DT3000 progressive shocks and the ride is to stiff for me when unloaded.

When Loaded with camping gear and two people the ride is on the stiff side but not too bad.

Problem is during the week the car is unloaded and the kidneys are bruised.

Im at my whits end I need a shock of this length that has decent valving for thes little machine of mine!

I have tried a few different rear shocks now and ive got the shits someone please help!!

hahaha 25" lifted vitara..

i think you messed up the heading

i was using the ironman website when i was doing a custom setup on my last 4wd. it shows the open and closed lenths of there shockies.

i then cross referenced it to a make and hey presto.. bought it in the brand i wanted.

Thanks but I can almost guarantee that they WILL be to stiff for my liking no one seems to take the time to valve their shocks properly for these little trucks.

It even states right there that the shocks are stiff and the vehicle will ride better with a load.

That's what my current set-up is like so i don't want to waste more money on shocks that provide the same results!

How did you cross reference the iron man part No. to say a Monroe part No.?

I have heard of people using VR VS commo rear shock also....

Does any one know if the valving would suit?

15-0060. by monroe are pretty close to what you want. among other things they are from a toyota corona station wagon

321mm compressed
531 extended

What about RS900 Rancho, Then you could adjust to suit.

Yes the length would be right and the valving would probably suit quite well...

But I checked the Monroe catalog and it states that part number has ferrule (eyelet) mounts both ends bummer!

Oh well I'm going to keep trolling the Monroe catalog for suitable shocks there must be a perfectly valved shock for people running more lift than standard 40mm lifted stuff all the big 4x4 mobs are selling.

The problem is Rancho only do a shock for vitara that have 40mm of lift which is to short for my application.

I think i might be on to something!

Kia sportage rear shocks are the perfect length at 545 ext and 333 compressed.

My boss has a sportage as loan car for customers so i might just be able to double check the lengths and maybe even take them for a quick drive to see if the damping is going to work in a grand vitara!

If you do that DON'T use genuine Kia shock's, That will fail....

If i confirm that they are of a suitable fit and performance i will simply purchase a set of monroe shocks which should hold up as good as any..

The reason i feel the sportage shocks might by a good match is the two vehicles are of a similar size and design both with coil sprung live axle rear ends.

The Kia is heavier but the valving may suit my slightly stiffer aftermarket rear springs?

EDIT-Actually the kurb weights are very similar with the kia coming in at 1475kg and the GV only a fraction lighter at 1470kg...Interesting.

they are mentioned as slightly stiff as my wife is not a fan of them but i love the ride and im happy but every person is different.

your 2.5inch lift is way to short for the extreme shocks.

for a 2.5 inch lift i have been using XL7 ome shocks as they are longer than GV.

Post subject:  Re: Rear shocks for 2.5" lifted Grand Vitara.

Well the sportage rear shocks have a larger (14mm) upper stud mount and the lower mount is 12mm (same as GV) but narrower..

Nothing a drill bit and some M12 washers couldn't fix!

So i know they will fit with minor effort and the length is spot-on for a 2.5" lift.

I just have to establish weather the ride is suitable which will mean convincing the boss to let me borrow the rear shocks for a test run in the GV!
