Pull em apart & see if it's not just a simple lack of lubrication in there, shit load's cheaper if it is..

Well i told the guy that checked it that the left side one is very hard to turn and that ive been using a shifter to turn it cause it was so hard to turn

and he said well thats the problem then, he gos it only takes one to go wrong for both not to work, but ill open them up on sat and see what if anything looks wrong or need more lub

$10 says the spring is broken inside the hub and that it has no grease in there.

Post subject:  Re: 4WD not engaging ???

lol how much does a spring cost ??

Author:  MrRocky [ Thu Mar 11, 2010 11:39 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 4WD not engaging ???

thats the best part, you cant just buy the spring, you have to but a rebuild kit or a second hand hub :D even though a new spring would cost $2 n-one makes them.

mine were in similar condition..

i pulled them apart sandblasted some pieces and clean the rest on a wire wheel.

greased them and put em back together.. still werent 100% but got me out of trouble. ended up with a spare set now as it was always in the back of my head that they werent 100%. will be fully rebuilding the spares when i get time

new hub required, i agree. but what about the picture 1 and 2, should i be looking for another diff or is there a part to fix this ?

you just need a new stub and bearings. theres just 4 bolts to pull the stub off. the tin backing plate will come off with it also

Post subject:  Re: 4WD not engaging ???

so did it just turn out to be something broken in the hub?

ive just spent 3 hours digging my car out of the mud because it wont go into 4wd... front shaft is spinning, front left hub needs a set of pliers to turn however the tyre on that side does look like its getting a little bit of power so im guessing the other side hub is broken.

keen to know exactly what went wrong because i have almost identical symptoms.

Post subject:  Re: 4WD not engaging ???

rather than starting a new thread hope i'm doing the right thing by jumping onto this one.
I'm having same probs as people here, vitara hubs are locked, front shafts are spinning when in 4wd but the wheels aren't.
Read through and thought it could be my hubs. Opened them up and they were pretty rusty (pics below).
From how they look I'm guessing that they're stuffed?! Next question is if they are stuffed would i be better off with decent set of second handys or a brand new set?
Don't use 4WD as often as i'd like but want it to work properly when i do :)

Post subject:  Re: 4WD not engaging ???

Yea your right, that cog/gear needs to slide onto the other gears spline on the end of the axle for the front wheels to turn.

See if you can get some oil/grease into them and get them moving, but they look like they are in pretty bad condition going by the pic.

Have you had the hubs in and the front wheels turning before?, that's very dry :P

Post subject:  Re: 4WD not engaging ???

when i bought it the guy said he'd taken it on the beach in 4wd. He seemed like a genuine guy so i believed it was working...until we got stuck the other week and had no 4wd to get out!
If i did get them working would they last very long given their condition?
Just want to know if its worth the time trying to get them working

Post subject:  Re: 4WD not engaging ???

Ah so he may have thought 4wd was working while tearing around in 2wd.

A set of 2nd hand ones will be cheap and work, want33s wanted $50 for some 2 years ago!, i'm not sure if they have increased in value :P.

You could always have a go while organising to get another set?, if you can get them apart, clean them up to get the surface rust off and grease them up they could come up ok. If it were me I would have a quick go and see how they come up, and if not really well buy another set.

It may be worth checking the rest of the front dif too, if the hubs are that neglected the rest of it behind the hub may be in need to of maintenance too :).
