Hi guys, My zook seems to feel like the clutch is slipping every now and then, It seems to do it more in 3rd gear running between 4 and 6 thousand rpm... I've tried to repeat the circumstances to get it to do it again, but I can't get it to do it again. I've only been able to feel/hear it doing a few times, and when i have noticed, glancing down at the tacho i can feel the car accelerating (like clutch gripping) as the revs drop down to around 4k Its only very minor at this stage, although it is starting to give me a little worry. I'm hoping its not the clutch starting to go, Is there anything else i can check before starting to save pennies? |

I would say you dont have long to save as once it starts to slip it is only a short time before she is gone. One thing you could do though is get under the car with a 14mm and a pair of pliers and adjust the cable a little but be carefull doing so could also make it go quicker. Looking at what you have on your rig I would spent the extra money and get a exedy HD clutch and get new clutch cable at the same time. Be sure to keep your old one in a safe place as a back up. Going to the HD clutch is good for offroad and great onroad. It is a little heavier. The big downside is they are hell on cables and you will brake them from time to time. Hope that helps a little. lol revving to 6k regularly before changing is asking for a burnt clutch =) Mine started doing similar not long ago and there was just a touch left on it - even though it never smelt or smoked (even driving offroad). It was a Daikin standard duty clutch - and lasted about 8 years, which includes me driving it on my P plates and learning to drive offroad in! New clutch is wrecked out of a jimny, pretty much brand new. |

mine lives for 6000rpm & quite often it see's it. how does a clutch wear from high rpm, i thought it would be from slipping it or loading it up low in the rev range? |

If you keep it at high revs and dump the clutch between each gear, not letting the engine lower its revs between gears it actualy one of the top causes for clutch failure. Its how most girls burn through clutches. where guys burn through tem dropping the clutch at take-off.
how does a clutch wear from high rpm, i thought it would be from slipping it or loading it up low in the rev range? high revs between gears will not hurt the flywheel as much as dropping the clutch at take off. |

My last Grand Vitara and my current sierra both love a few rpm... they don't seem to like being driven slowly anywhere... That said, I try not to put too much pressure on the clutch, I do rev up to 4-6 thousand revs before changing gear, but i also make sure the car is moving at a reasonable speed for the next gear (ie, i'll change gear at whatever speed i will cruise in at the next gear - except for 5th gear - there won't be much accelleration i'll use in the next gear) That being said also, My car doesn't look too flash from the outside, and i love showing people that look down (figuratively speaking) at my car that it can outperform them (gotta lova a good power:weight ratio) I really need a decent paint job to cure me of that... Thanks dave for the clutch advice, I'll look into it. Problem is because i bought the car with the new engine in it, I'm not 100% sure what other stuff he changed out also (ie, vitara clutch/gearbox/transfer case also?) - I bought the car because i'm not a mechanic but i want to learn more mechanical skills, and this car seemed perfect for that - good quality engine, not much rust, fairly well equipped, just needed some maintenance, a little love and all's well. (plus i hated scratching new paint - i don't have to worry in this car) |

My vote on replacing with a standard clutch! I can rev to 6k. But dont like to, there's no power up there in Suzy's setup. (wish i had my civic back for that, used to live in 6k+, oh the sound )

Could also be that the rear main is leaking and oil is getting between clutch and pressure plate/flywheel. |

I don't know about a rear main causing that but couldn't it be a gearbox input shaft seal also? |

hahhaah OMG i've not revved my 1.6 EFI harder than about 6000, and even then it was just to see how fast i could go in 2nd gear... lol not even offroad. |

I use it as often as possible... hmmm, my tacho is either more inaccurate than I first suspected (I know it reads slightly wrong), or the GV motor is different to the earlier ones 
Either way, I don't understand some of you guys not attaining 6000rpm, far out my G13 carb motor easily revved higher
