Post subject:  snapped timing belt, Any chance of head damage?
Hi all,

Today with my 24 hour old 1.3l sierra i was driving and all of a sudden, stopped. Thought i was spark, No it was sparking, Fuel? no plenty of fuel... coil??? nope, timing belt!!!! garrr

so anyway im a bit scared as i have been told that it often results in head damage, but the RAC bloke said it should be fine... so i dono would a 1.3L engine have any chance of head damage?

Fit a new belt & enjoy, thay are a non interferance eng, so unless you were doing 8500 Rpm, you will be O K ! :P

As long as you don't have your head/block shaved down like mine you will be fine. there is a huge amount of room between the valves and piston tops.

the cam belt could have snapped due to oil starvation in the head causing the cam to seize.

Been there, done that :cry:
Moral of the story is don't let people fix oil leeks on your engine with thread tape on bolts that go into oil channels!

If that was the case surly you would hear something, It wouldnt just stop and come to a nice rolling stop... i did find a washer inside the cover soo it is possible the last person who did it stuffed up and resulted in this, It was only one 40,000kms ago too!

good call, Well i dono thought i saw spark, but i was sitting in the drivers seat looking through the window at the plug...

Yep vouch for that one to! not so much the thread tape, but certainly oil starvation causing the T-belt to snap.. Even happens on BRAND FREAKING NEW ONES!! HOW TO FIX... Make sure Head has OIL when cranking over, pour it in if ya have to..

screwdriver sparking on to block, but RAC bloke didnt check for spark, his a bit smarter then me i think :lol:

this story keeps changing more and more snapped t/belt but still spark and fuel this RAC bloke is tops easiest thing to do is pull the head of check valves piston tops if ok wind crank over to check bottem end is my thought no good slappin another t/belt on to just snap.

Gotta be careful taking everything said by 5 minute roadside assistance people as being correct - an racq guy told me 2 weeks ago I had a broken timing belt - my stepfather and I took half the engine apart in my Honda before realising it was just a weak coil that was the problem.

Also, anyone had a timing belt skip a tooth or 2 in a zuk before - had a Toyota do that to me once...

Yep I have had my retaining spring on the timing belt tensioner fall down between the belt and gear and cause the timing belt to jump around a few teeth. Took me a while to figure out what was going on as it still ran surprisingly but not too well (as you might imagine).

As others have said if the fuel pump and distributor are still working the cam is still spinning and the timing belt is still working in some sort of fashion.

fuel was getting sprayed into the carb when i pumped the accelerator, It was there may not have been enough to run the car, but it was there.

but timing belt is replaced, car is running great, and no head damage...

oh and story isnt changing, as i said i checkd for spark and fuel, may not have
been correct but yeah RAC bloke only told me it was timing :wink:

so yeah pull the piss outa me, not the rac bloke, he was pretty good
