I don't believe they exist. You will probably have to custom make one.

x2

The 4age will bolt up to a t50 gearbox, but then you will have to set up a transfer case.

Ring this guy and talk to John sherman.

He can make it for you but it will cost about $700. He is magic when it comes to engine adaptor plates. Does it all including fitting your starter, modifiing your flywheel to take the standard clutch and all the bits you don't think of. Don't think he just does VW stuff he does it all.

Hell if he can put a p76 v8 in the back of a VW then anything is possible

When you say in it what do you mean? is it sitting in the back or bolted in with no gearbox attached?

Yes, I know Jonno. Find me a 4 speed auto that bolts to a 4AGE though. I need a 4 speed or my transfer and diff gearing won't work.

I'm even considering using a T700R4 (commodore) as it has a 3.05 1st and I won't break it.

Anyone that has the motor bolt pattern for a 4AGE and a 3800 Commodore motor should be able to do it.

Steve.

In a similar post a while back Royce mentioned a guy he knew that has done this conversion using a flat adapter plate similar to the "Ben T" ones for 1600vit to sierra box. Why not try contacting "Ben T" and seeing if he will make you one, his sierra ones work well and are cheap.

Well.......I did digitize a 4age block in my coordinate measuring machine a while ago with thoughts of doing an adaptor like this, but haven't done anything since then, other than overlay the 4age and G13/16 patterns to see what they look like.
I think it could be done, but the motor would probably need to be leaned over a few degrees. That might help with brake booster clearance anyway.

I haven't looked into the flywheel/torque converter diameters or thicknesses at all.

overkill did it!!

there is also a zook down here with a 4age in it and a sierra box. i beleve the guy cut the bellhousing off a sprinter box and cut the belhousing off a sierra box and weldedit up...

i have not sceen it but herd lots...

I just don't understand why someone would want to use a sierra box infront of this motor?

Anyway, what is holding the engine and box together at the moment? :?

steve is running one behind a turbo vit motor with no issues...

they are a strong/ish light and short box!

id say its a vit WITH a 4age... not in it

I have a standard 1.6 and rebuilt 1.3 box, and its not liking it.

Steves doesn't get driven too much, and after finding the limits of his transfer case, I'm sure the gearbox is on the motors hit list ( touch wood for steve :D )

i may be wrong... i thought it did...

i would also be intrested in finding out the limmtis of a 1.3box.. i have given them heeps for years with hot 1.3s' and now twin cam 1.3s no issues as of yet.. just noisey bearings from watter

yeah 5th is small however how oftin are u on the power in 5th???

my last box was intresting. the circlip had broken on the end of the output shaft and was letting the gear push away from the selector and jump out of gear.

other than that mine have just become warn and very hard to get in2 1st and 2nd.

I'm happy to be a guinea pig - I've bought no parts for my next build yet as I haven't resolved the engine/gearbox combination. I'm in love with the power and rev range of Dank's 4AGE 20V, but I really want to run an AW-4 auto for it's deep first gear and tall overdrive.

Are you interested in knocking an adapter plate up? (Just a plate - I'm happy to sort the converter/flexplate etc.

Steve.

Post subject:  Re: 4age in vitara

gravedig,

well guys the A40 auto is no good for a 20V 4age. Maybe with a stock 16V, but i think it would be marginal. In my experience I had my A40 fully rebuilt before I put it in. About a year later and a number of trip under my belt, 1st gear and 3rd gear clutch packs have given up...they are ok in low range barely, but high range I can't hold 100kmh as it flares and drops back to 80km/h, and was pretty much slipping all the time trying to drive the 34s.

I'm looking into some more options now. For now I think I will buy another A40 secind hand and chuck it in and drive it for winter in the meantime look at some other options.

Thinking either like BenT was looking at G16 to 4AGE adapter for me the trimatic would work and can be built for power. I still think a 4 spd would be marginal but a lower first gear and overdrive would look after it a little better.

When you got it rebuilt, did you get it built to stock or better? What temp was it running at?

There is no options off the shelf to build up these autos stronger than stock. Thats the problem, it would be a fully custom job to make up new clutch packs that would hold the power, huge $$$

What I did get done was the accumulators on first and second were shimmed for a snappier shift between gears. It was a pretty sweet mod and the gear shifts were excellent. it's just the fact that the clutch packs can't hold the intial power and slip and slip and slip until they finally grab. Combine this with a tallish first gear and it makes it worse.

My very first trip i think it got a bit hot, but I installed a cooler from a VP commodore with small thermo after that so i don't think temps were ever an issue.

Anyway I will keep posting here as i find out more info.
