Motor swap happening this friday night...seems I am now changing out the transfer case as well because it fuxing exploded on me last night...

What Oil do you guys run in the gearbox (5 speed behind the 1.3) and how much?

What Oil is good for the T-Case and how much again?

I run 80w or 90w in both.

Fill untill they come out the filler..

According to the manual:

Gearbox - 1.3L
T-case - 0.8L
Front diff - 2.0L
Rear diff - 1.5L

I use Castrol 80/90w in the gearbox, transfer and diffs, It works out cheaper to buy a 4L bottle.. If you don't have one, you will have to buy a suction gun to put the oil in. Autobarn have a bottle pump for about $25 and is a bit easier to use than the syringe type.

If you pull out the transfer case gearstick, you can fill the transfer from the top (i filled it so the shift rods were half covered)

If you have a bit of hose and small arms, you can tape a funnel to a length of hose, feed it from inside the cab, through the hole (in the cab thats for the transfer case gearstick) and into the gearbox... Its slow, but it works...

Unless you're cars different to mine, which isn't unlikely...

Diff, gearbox, transfer case's have FILLER HOLES for a couple of reasons.
1) because that's where you suppose to fill it with oil.
2) so you don't overfill it with oil.

do you fill your engine oil up to the cams?

No, but I've seen it done :lol:

Also seen a mechanic measure out the prescribed amount of oil for a motor (10 or 11L) then proceed to pour the entire amount in, only to check the dipstick to find the motor was still empty. It was at that point he slipped over and landed in 10L of clean oil :lol:

hey it had been running like that for about 6 months since i bought it, figured it had been running well so might as well keep doing it.

Did it about 2 months ago, still running well :)

Anyways, thats why i bought an 88 Sierra... i'm a geek not a grease monkey - i'm gonna break shit and learn more shit when i put it back together.





And its FURY not FURRY... although the original owner of the name lordfury was covered in hair... link

Isn't prevention better than cure? We all make mistakes, But now that you know it's wrong, Don't you think you should drain it and do it properly?

It would probably be a good idea if you buy a service manual, Besides showing you how to do it, It's a good book for some light reading.

now that we have hit summer my driveline has started to whine and so I want to put slightly thicker gear oil in there. at the moment it has castrol 80/90, what help reduce the noise?
