Can it be done? Or will I set fire to my vitara?
I know that I SHOULD run them through a relay, but in a pinch, can I run them off the standard headlight wiring??

should work for a night or two before it burns out the switch... or finds the highest resistance joint to melt.. 
Have seen it done, but due to the wiring lengths you end up with about 2-4 volts drop so the bulbs have such low voltage you get no material gain in light output. better & cheaper to put some H4 plus 30 (or plus 50) 55/60w bulbs in, as the vits have the plastic rear light housings and these housings will melt if you put high wattage (read as high heat) bulbs in.... found that out a while ago.... |

No, but its dead simple... Put 12V on one end of the relay coil, and the original headlight wire to the other. The on the other side of the relay, put the headlight circuit. Make sure you run a decent sized earth as well as 12v cable to the headlight! |

pete wouldnt you just wire them like spotties and stekky its a coily and nothing fits them so the bulbs props wouldnt but a few litres of petrol and a match would |

Noobcad it is! Scanned this when I wired mine up so I could trace it back more easily if anything ever went wrong.... Relay for high beam, relay for low beam and relay for each pair of spots.

My main concern now is that the plastic housing may melt.

When I put relay's and good globes in the Sierra it made a massive difference to the amount of light they were putting out. |

Yeah maybe. Or I'll just buy some new ones
I've gone off the HID kits. They are too unreliable, the cops are starting to defect them, as they are illegal, and too many oncoming cars with abusive drivers. |

throw them in the bin and smack yourself about the head for even thinking of it, wattage doesnt equal light output go get some philips plus 50 or 80 or whatever they are up to now, then relay them suckers too |

Surprisingly not, no. I have 100/130W H4's in mine and due to the ride height can angle them right down but still get a good spread. Oncoming traffic doesn't get any glare unless its a bumpy section of road where any headlights will 'flash' as the nose of the car rises. It does mean my high beams now have a shorter throw, but that makes them great mid-fill. I have HID driving lights for distance. Royce - it might not be directly proportionate (haven't got a clue what the relationship is) but they are way better than the Narva 55/60W +80%'s I had in there previously. I can drive quite happily on a twisty country road using my headlights only (no driving lights) - couldn't do that with the +80%'s. Not to mention that BOTH of those same expensive new Narva globes blew low beam less than 4 hours into a trip across the Nullabor. I had two 100/130W spotlight globes in the back so dropped them in to finish the trip, and they were so good that they've stayed there ever since... Definitely agree you wouldn't want 90/110 or 100/130 with a 'normal' beam pattern though. You have to be prepared to dip them right down and use driving lights for distance. BTW this is the difference you can expect between running stock wiring loom (12.5v at light) versus relay (14v) with H4's. And this is the difference between stock D1's and Narva +80% H4's. |

I use the phillips H4 100/90W ($13 pair) in my sierra in IPF housings ($60 each from ARB) and they are fantastic. Did a loom upgrade while I was at it. The high beam will pick up eyes at about 1km. The only issue I have is the relfective road signs strain the eyes if i go past with high beams on. Low beam is fine if aimed correctly. |
