Hi All, Anyone able to tell me if it is worthwhile buying heavy duty igniton leads? Supercheap can get a set for the G16b for $80 standard (Bosch - B4261i ) or $117 'heavy duty' (Top Gun - TG4489) or NGK (RC-SE14) for $90 Anyone know what the difference is and if it's worth it? http://www.bosch.co.nz/content/language ... eb_ready(1).pdf http://www.topgunleads.com.au/catalogue2008.pdf Cheers Chris |

I have always bought h/duty leads. IMO it gives a better spark and a bit more longevity from the leads. Like I said my opionion though, some may have differing opinions |

I'd run Bosch way before that Top Gun crap. |

x2...bit of a contradiction, but I have always had leads made up at QLD ignition leads. The last set I bought for the sierra were about $90 |

ok, thanks guys, what about NGK? Anyone know if they are better than the Bosch? I have no idea if they are claimed to be heavy duty? Anyone able to tell? RC-SE14 - $90 online |

Jas, why is that, I have top gun, lowest impedance I can find. |

RC-SE14 - $90 online Seems like both the NGK and Bosch are stainless braided, so I can't see much difference in them except $10-20 price. I'll get the NGKs cause I have never had a bad experience with NGK spark plugs, but I did with bosch plugs and fuel pump. |

Standard leads are fine, Heavy Duty i suppose are nice, but why pay the extra? Most cars with reasonable performance mods can get away with a 7-8mm lead EASILY Whilst most aftermarket leads are a common 10mm which is rediculous overkill for any Zook i could ever think of Top Gun aren't a bad brand at all, infact they're reasonbly reputable. Bosch by comparison are yes, well known.. But they aren't anything special. Bosch make some of the worst spark plugs known to man, and suck horridly at making a competitively priced O2 Sensor (Atleast for Hondas, unsure about Suzi) They're an OEM replacement parts dealer, it "meets" OEM standard, and in rare cases exceeds. My vote is NGK or Champion, those are great easily sourced brands for ignition products |

I don't know which is better and I don't care since I have Top Gun on one of my Sierras and Bosch on the other and there is no noticable difference in performance, but has anyone else had the drama of pulling a lead off while the car is running (to troubleshoot) only to have the boot over the end come off on the Top Gun leads and give you a nice electric shock. My Bosch leads don't have that problem... I will definitely buy Bosch next time! |

I will definitely buy Bosch next time! Absolutely terrified of 45,000 volt kiks, always use a lead puller pliers. Shep, how on earth do you get that, my oil is near that much, was this from a mate who watched it fall off the back of a truck. |

If you willing to spend that much. Look into leads from ice ignitions in Clayton. |

I can't remember how many faulty TopGun leads I've replaced over the years. Bigger diameter leads are a bit of a joke........ My 2Rz EFI Hiace runs puny little 4 or 5mm leads as do most new cars... They have done 220,000km without issue. My ute runs MSD Superconductor leads which are only 8.5-9mm or so even with a 7AL2 ignition system. Cut open a TopGun 10mm lead and you'll find the core is the same as a 6mm lead but it has more rubber/plastic around it which does SFA. |

I have no idea there, mine are 8mm. I go by the impedance, as far as I understand, there is less leakage with thicker leads, but once past a point, its all show n extra dollars. |

yes, well the thicker leads would stop them shorting, that is why mine are still running (lots of electrical tape) but I had to re-tape them the other day, so I thought I'd buy new ones, and keep these taped ones as spares. |

OK, my leads are shot after only 15000K travelled... just swapped them out for the shitty looking ones on my spares motor and it's a night and day difference. I finally found the gremlin in my electrical system... damn you LPG! Not really, I love you LPG Anyway, I can't afford to replace leads every 6 months so I wanna sort a long term fix. The standard 8mm Bosch Super Sports aren't enough so it's time for overkill - gonna buy some 10.5mm ignition cable off Eagle Products and make my own to last a loooong time. Just a matter of sourcing plug connectors and boots for the job... can anyone point me in the right direction? |

Take a tape measure and a multi meter to the wrecking yard. you can get a set of great leads for $10.00 plus you can get a pocket full of bolts, fuses and relays as well. hell cut the relay holders out of the wiring loom too. and if you are tight enough you can get bulbs for tail lights as well and even headlight bulbs if you are super stingy |

Lets put it this way, you aren't building a racecar, any brand of new leads im sure will do the job, and as long as they meet the OEM Requirements they will be fine. |

More often than not these thick 'super leads' 7,8,10,12mm what ever correspond to the total thickness of the leads. Core conducting material is usually the same diameter within them. |

A man after my own heart but i don't think of it as being stingy its more about being Carbon Neutral.. (we used to call it recycling but marketing has changed its tune i get nuts, bolts, fuses and yes bulbs... not sure i would go as far as leads. Generic bosch leads are $6 each at supercheap. i figured ACTUALLY buying a set of 5 each on average of 6 months to a year for $30 would be better than buying really snazzy leads for $100+ and then not replacing them again. |

Not in my case, but like I said i'm running LPG - different requirements. The Bosch 8mm Super Sports are supposed to last 5 years/100K on a petrol donk... I got no more than 6 months and 15K before they turned bad, for the last two months they've been unbearable, but I've been pointing fingers at spark plugs, ignition modules and coils wondering what hell happened to my spark - it was the leads all along. These would be ideal http://www.eagleproducts.com.au/product ... or_lpg.php , but doubt i'll find a set for a G16B. Time to get my Maguyver on and make my own |

They were too new, I had faith they were OK
Symptoms of bad leads: Rough as hell idle, random misfires, hesitation when you put the foot down, top speed -10%. |
