| Post subject: | So frustrated - Suzuki Sierra 1994 2 x Problems... |
Hi all, I just had to join this forum after searching and searching - I guess I need some expert advice! I have two problems with my Sierra... No1. A VERY high (ear piercing) whine when stationary, out of gear. It goes when you rev past 1100rpm. No2. Automatic choke doesn't work and I have no idea how to test it. It runs too slow from cold, so I have to turn the idle screw up, then it warms up and it runs too fast, so obviously I have to turn it down manually again. So, can anyone help me out? Thanks for reading and your time is much appreciated Pommy3D |

For the noise: check the fan belt tension. Does the noise go away if you step on the clutch? Thermo choke: ....Paging Royce.... |

Hi, thanks for the fast reply. The noise is definitely not the fan belt. It's like a low pitched whine coming from under the exhaust manifold? I'll take some video and some pics this arvo, has to be heard! Thanks guys! |

It's like a low pitched whine coming from under the exhaust manifold? Exhaust manifold gasket leaking, or hairline crack in Manifold? Or maybe the bearings in your Turbo have failed?? |

Ahhh only just got back and it's dark. I'll have some pics of the carb and a video of that damn noise in the morning. Thanks again for the support |

Stationary out of gear. So I take it that is in neutral without the clutch depressed? So it goes away with the clutch in? My second zook is making a whining noise (not ear piercing though) in that area with all the above symptoms. I'm guessing maybe the throwout bearing. Maybe someone else could chime in whether the throwout bearing should be spinning in neutral without the clutch depressed. Exhaust leak could make the noise but obviously whether it's in gear or stationary should make no difference. |

Ooooh... That's a weird one but it sounds to me like possibly a harmonic vibration. Check the front pulley is tight for starters. Check every bolt you can find come to think of it. Whereabouts are you ?? |

hehe yep that isn't your throwout bearing. Sounds like a tuning fork on roids. Rev change changes the frequency so you can't hear it. I wonder if the metal jacket around the exhaust manifold could do that. |

Could be a thin tin shield vibrating such as the exhaust heat shield. Could also be electrical noise from the alternator as well. Easy way to check this would be to simply remove the fan belt and start the engine |

Hi, Pulley tight - everything tight! Heat shield secure. No hoses loose. Seems to be coming from the front undeer the belt cover!? Arrrgh?! Oh, it gets better when it's warmed up (indicates metal to me again). |

Thats loud enuff for my deaf ears to hear. Mine did a similar thing once. Improper, missing or worn spacer rubber bit behind timing cover, can push the cover onto the cam pulley.. Is it up near front? carefully pull n push top of timing belt cover, see if it hits. watch hands and fingers near spinning fan etc |

Hi - that's very generous of you - but i'm embarrassed to say I can't really pay you - not even in beers at the moment I'll take the cover off as the previous post suggested and see if that stops it - it seems in the video that it gets louder around that point. You can't tell when you are in front of it where it's coming from. I'll post back tomorrow and let you know what happened! Great forum by the way - just great! |

I have seen dry seal's make that noise... But that was a new seal fitted with out lube, doubt an old one would dry out enough to make that noise tho.. |

have you tried using a long screwdriver or similiar as a stethoscope and listening for a dry bearing.. I would try the alternator or water pump as first candidates.. do the little heater/ water hoses on the carby get warm when the car has run for a while?? is the choke butterfly open when you look down the carby throat?? |

do me a favour , and when the noise occurs , stand at the right hand guard , grab the oil cap and tappet cover and pull , see if it goes away , im betting its a collapsed engine mount and the metal cover on the mount is making that noise. hence when you rev the engine its lifting enough off the cover to stop the noise. |

ohh i have also heard this noise another place before , and it was a couple of loose bolts in the l/h mount where it mounts to the block , so best to check all the bolts there and the other thing i suggested |

" I would try the alternator or water pump as first candidates.." I took the fan belt off and the noise is there still. "do the little heater/ water hoses on the carby get warm when the car has run for a while??" The two poking out of the back get warm after about 2 mins or less of running. "Is the choke butterfly open when you look down the carby throat??' I'll take that off in a second "do me a favour , and when the noise occurs , stand at the right hand guard , grab the oil cap and tappet cover and pull , see if it goes away , im betting its a collapsed engine mount and the metal cover on the mount is making that noise. hence when you rev the engine its lifting enough off the cover to stop the noise." Nope, makes no diffeernce unfortunately "ohh i have also heard this noise another place before , and it was a couple of loose bolts in the l/h mount where it mounts to the block , so best to check all the bolts there and the other thing i suggested" Not that either.... its VERY hard to pinpoint. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m143 ... s/Carb.jpg |

Cold carb: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m143 ... s/Cold.jpg After 2 mins running: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m143 ... r2mins.jpg From cold start it runs, barely and juddering at 500rpm, after 10 mins it idles at 1000rpm perfectly. |

Good news, your choke works, its just a little off At thte back of your photos, see the metal fan shaped gear thingo that works agaisnt teh white plastic gear?, follow the metal bit along its linkages and down and you see a threaded adjuster going through it, accesable from teh passenger side, you jsut need to adjust that a bit so the choke flap (flap on top of the carb) closes up a bit more WHEN COLD!!!! try it cold and see where its at, you might find you need to go some more or if it struggles when you drive you might need a bit less you can adjsut the cold idle speed independant of that but its a bit harder and better to get this part working better first |
