Hi, having trouble getting the drums back over the new shoes i just installed. Not sure how anything can be adjusted. Keep reading about star wheel adjusters but cant see anything like that in there. Wheel cylinders are fully compressed. PS its sierra rear drums I am talking about. Cheers |

the lever that the handbrake works off, there is a curved thingy with a sort of serrated edge that jams against another bit, jam a flat screwdriver in there and lever it so the rounded part pushes in towards the backing plate youll see the shoes move in, then stick your drum on and lightly pump the pedal up, that rounded thing will ratchet back out to adjsut the shoes into place |

royce and you are talking about the "star wheel" auto adjusters, you can release them from the back of the brake though the little hole with a flat screw driver. The mechanic I took my car to get the RWC, it had been so long since he even worked on a car with drum brakes, he couldnt get them off and so failed them. Me: did you release the auto adujsters? him: "The what?" |

even with adjusters backed all the way off they still don't go on. I am resorting to grinding the dicks down on the shoes where they go on the wheel cylinders. |

What would make you possibly think we dont service our cars? Comments like that are asking for a flame war! Ive done major services to mine 3 times in 8 months! I pulled off the whole front of the motor and replaced much of it because the fan pulley was a little wobbly, changed unis in the front drive shaft that were hardly worn. I don't want to talk to you, no more, you empty-headed animal, food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. You mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries. Actually, I would have change the cylinder to the correct one too but given the shoes that came out were done the same way and worn very evenly, and I had just spent hundereds of dollars on other parts and I had to get the RWC the next day to make my Vic Roads appointment I did it. Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time! |

You either have the wrong wheel cylinders or brake shoes mate. There are a few different combinations out there. Grinding down the tabs on the shoe sounds dodgy but personally I don't see an issue with it as long as there is sufficient material left on the tab to properly locate it within the wheel cylinder and the wheel cylinder does not over extend. |

and the radius on the shoe still works, you could end up with heaps of shoe not touching the drum |

it was a matter of grind a bees dick off coz all adjusted loose it still wouldn't go on. Now tell me whats better brakes that work well or brakes that dont. |

Yeah, I would not have done it if it was the wrong shoe for the drum, that would be nasty. |

Comments like that are asking for a flame war! If you, or anyone really, service a vehicle thoroughly and regularly you will know what needs replacing before it reaches its wear limit. You don't wait till your brakes are metal on metal to change the shoes do you? You want to do them while there is still material left. By using this rationale, if you find you have been supplied incorrect parts, you can refit old parts to get you mobile to enable procurement of correct items. Hence my original statement about servicing not just fixing. neofitou wrote: Ive done major services to mine 3 times in 8 months! A wobbly water pump has reached its service life and should be replaced, replacing the timing belt, idler bearing and seals while you are there is standard practice.... Uni joints with ANY play in them should also be replaced.
The difference I'm getting at is scheduled versus unscheduled work.. How often do you see an ambulance broken down? |

WT shoes have a larger hole for the handbrake lever. The NT shoes can be made to fit with the right die grinder bit, but its easier to just buy the right ones. Not sure about NT but WT are 1617's. |

All fixed with a lick on the grinder. |
