Hay all, I hope someone has some suggestions cause its getting annoying.

I have thing squeal like a slipping fan belt (and its not the fan belt) that starts around 2500rpm and disappears after 3000rpm in every gear, its driving me mad. The engine will be gone in a few weeks as i just picked up a G16. I just would like to beat this noise and find out what is causing it.

I have removed the cover over the exhaust manifold and there is a crack, could that be it????? I have a set of extractors for the new motor so no big issue there.

Does it do it with the clutch in or out?

both clutch in or out, it quietens a little when the clutch is in cause of no load on the engine, but its still there...... i have a new clutch for the new engine also.

Thrust bearing maybe, dos the noise change according to revs?

Very slightly, but also its only in about a range of 500rpm. I will try and record it, its dam loud also like a squealing fan belt.

Sounds like something in the clutch to me.. Throw out or possibly the spigot bearing but that's just a guess.

Make sure to fit a new spigot bearing to the G16.. Many people overlook them and prematurely wear out the input shaft.

yup got a new thrust bearing and the spiggot as well, my spare room is full of parts.

Hey mate, i had the exact same same problem in my 91' sierra. extremely annoying noise at about 3000rpm, was stumped as to what it was...

Ended up being a bolt for the exhaust above the cat, that screws on to the bottom of your transmission. It was put on wrong and the spacer was rubbing on the metal of the bracket.

Hay all funny thing was i found the noise. it was the shroud just after the cat, it had a crack in it and at that point in the revs the harmonics made it vibrate and squeel. I tore it off and all was good. Funny as hell that something simple like that caused me so much grief

I spent 2 weeks trying to find a noise,
different noise to yours, but mine was a loose bolt,
where cat bolts up.
We learn new shit everyday :)

I had a really strange noise once, just after I did a bunch of work on my starter motor.

I ended up pulling it out a few times, as well as checking everything else in the area. The noise persisted, and was semi-random.

A few days later, my e-tag fell off the windscreen, and the noise stopped. It was vibrating on the mirror.
