hey guys, just bought my first zook (84 model) and found a hole on the left side of the gearbox just behind the motor. my dads 94 hasnt got this hole and was curious to what it was and if it was supposed to have a cover.

what happens if you put you dingus in this unknown hole?
if you lose your dingus when the motors running it probably got a cover from the factory

Its the breather hole for the mice that run around to turn the motor. You need to put bread and grains in there to keep the mices happy so they don't stop running!

Well, you've got lots of replies but no answers.
It's the timing hole. There are scribe marks cut on the flywheel to show the timing for No1 cylinder. If you use a timing light off No1 HT lead and shine it in there you will see the scribe marks, You adjust the distributor so that it fires when the the scribe mark is aligned with the step on the side of the hole. It's in this location so that 1 person can adjust the timing by seeing the mark and reaching the distributor. Later Sierras moved the timing notches to the crank pulley (which is typical of many cars), but you now need 2 people to adjust the timing. This was an improvement to enhance your social life.
And yes there should be a rubber (or Urethane, Bruce) plug in the hole.
