Firstly let me say that I know what a re-tread is but I never knew you could get 4x4 re-treads!!!

To me retreads were always the cheap shitty things people put on their farm rigs and trailers but lately I've seen guys mention re-tread muddies and alike and I'm just a bit curious.

I'm after the were/what and WHY?? Is it just the cost that attracts people or can you get specific patterns etc? I have a weekend warrior zook that barely sees the light of day and have always wanted to try some mud boots on it but just cant justify the price........ maybe there's other options?

What are peoples thoughts?

retreads/remolds/recaps are shit.

Post subject:  Re: Whats the deal with re-treads???

do it mate, Normally ther 4wd tyres are a full recap which means its a bead to bead replacement, not just the tread.

When I first bought my zook I ran a bfg muddies style motorway recap in 30x9.5-15, they cost me all of $120 each at the time and they were a bloody awesome tyre. 7 years on, i know the guy that now owns them and he's runnning them on a zook he daily drives.

For a cheap shitter, and zooks being a light vehicle, they are a high consideration.

On road they are the stupidist thing every thought of in tyres. They are cheap and verrrrrrry nasty. Offroad ONLY vehicle however MAY not have the same issues...

They're good to make alot of smoke when doing a burnout, and if your lucky enough it will fly off and hit your mates.

Haha so you either love them or hate them hey?? :) My turbo set up doesn't need help spinning wheels, it needs the opposite!! I have 235/75/15 BFG A/T's and I can't help feeling they're the weak like in my set up. I have plenty of power, 4.16 t/case, rear locker, 2" BL and 2" ome. Mostly I do sand but some mud and rock when I can get it. Clearance and power are never an issue but traction is lacking. Just sussing my options :)

I had a set of mongrel re-moulds years ago. They were great on and off road. Never had an issue with them at all.

If you drive your turbo rig like a knob and bag up your tyres at every given opportunity, then perhaps re-treads etc aren't for you

you're assuming I drive like a knob or give my tyres hell, infact I'd say im totally opposite- a total nanna driver. In 2 years of running my set up I'm yet to have a single breakage. My traction issues aren't loud pedal related but like I said I think my treads don't do my zook justice. I'm just looking for a relatively cheap way to test my theory.

I appreciate your input though!

Actually if you read my post again you will find that it starts with the word "IF". I wasn't saying you drive like a knob. I was making a statement and YOU were required to decide if it was relevent to your driving style or not. Statement. Not accusation.

right you are :) Its down to interpretation and perhaps I'm inclined to assume you were accusing me because of the perception most have of turbo zook drivers. Then again this isn't outters lol.

So that said what's your take on re-treads?

I liked my mongrels. They had their quality issues over the years, and as with any product that is based on a recycled part, consistancy is hard to obtain.

But they don't make the mongrel anymore, so I can't really comment on any other re-treads etc, as I have not had any first hand experience.

So my point is moot :D

And I actually plan to join the turbo zook club next year. Aswell as the supercharged zook club if all goes to plan

I'm actually in 2 minds as to the future of my Suzuki. I've done the usual Morgan, puppy springs, dorado downs, border track and ngarkat, York peninsula and my old home down Canunda. Now I want to go further for longer and think my only option is to go bigger, but do I keep the zook? I know people will argue the zook will hack flinders and Simpson crossings but with a mrs and 2 big dogs space is my biggest issue. But this is about Tyres and trying to justify spending more lol.

As for a build thread I don't have mass amounts of pics but could get some now of finished results? Basically it's a 91 WT SWB soft top. I've done gti conversion, haltech computer with hall effect to remove the dizzy, surge tank, thermo, td04l turbo on steam pipe manifold, modified rx intercooler, adjustable cam gears, oil cooler, extreme clutch, 4.16 tcase, rear lock wrong (not a massive fan but live with it), Cressida power steer, ome 2", 2" BL, GTi steering wheel, 110a alt blah blah blah lol.

Oh and I know people will pm and ask me so I'll post the all important details lol. Sleeperzook makes 100rwKw @ 7200rpm and 180Nm on 7PSI (runs AVCR elec boost control @10 PSI from 2800-6000 then pulls back to 7PSI tuned to low/mid 12 AFR)

This is true :P but i have been retreading tyres for near on 12 years now so ive seen the damage they can do when they let go
I only retread truck tyres now witch is a different process but i started out making car and LT retreads and i myself knowing how they are made would never use them on the road
Just my 2c

I'm with Joe. Retreads are for drive and trailer tyres on trucks.

I reckon they look alright. The price is definately right!!

If you did alot of hyway k's I would imagine these tyres would not suit ( 1. because they are re-moulds, and 2. because they are agressive muds)

Ive looked at those blokes before^^^ but they only do mud tyres in 16"... the 15" tyres are just a AT..

But in saying that they had a package awhile ago, been 5 tyres and rims for like $850 to suit a sierra. I think it was 29inch tyres and 16" rims.
