Post subject:  Checking out a Sierra on Saturday, need help.
Hey I know this has probably been answered a couple times, sorry. But I was wondering what I should look for to see if it's alright or not, like where to look for rust and also to see if it's all good not dodgy. Also could you please tell me how to check, as in with the rust how do I get to certain parts to check it. Also can you show some pics so I know exactly where to look and what I'm actually looking at. Thanks everyone, Nathan

take a magnet.. check sills, check windscreen frame, check B pillar around the black plastic bit, firewall in wheel arches, drivers n passenger floor, and rear of tub.. They arnt that big dude.. its pretty easy to give it a once over in search of rust in half hour...

he means fridge magnet.... A pillar is the widscreen, B is the targa bar or "roll bar" on a softop.

other than rust, chuck it in 4wd and see if its noisy, check radiator isnt leaky, check no 'milk' under oil cap, check rad for oil, check air filter condition and wipe inside the air inlet with ur finger to check how dirty it is (red dust means 4wding usually), check underneath for dings and dents that indicate offroad use, wheel bearings, brakes, clutch, downchange from 2nd to first and see if it grinds bigtime (bearing in tcase), check exhaust for rust, run it for ages and see if the temp goes up...

all the usual crap you do when you buy a car.

on a 2 dorr vehicle A, B & C pillars relate to the pillars holding the roof up, A being the front, B the middle & C the rear ones. On a 4 door there would be A,B,C,D pillars... with the D pillar being the last one.

mate as far as i can gather from reading other threads the A piller is the first piller (windscreen frame), B pillar second along (side of ur head) etc etc.

please correct me if wrong,

the magnet would be to check for bog, the magnet will stick to metal (which is good) and not to bog (meaning its been repaired in a dodgy way)

just take it for a good drive (let it get to running temp) and check everything.

dude.. a magnet wont stick to bog.. unless its a REALLY dodgy bogjob...(hehehehehe)

the tub is what we will call the body.. imagine if there was no roof on the car.. where abouts would water gather? Check them spots.... All the low points.. or where mud n crap can gather and start to eat away at the body...

The Windscreen is at the front of the vehicle.. its normally got a big bit of FLAT glass stuck in it.. this is also referred to as the A pillar.. we work backwards.. so the next would be the B pillar.. this is where the door would close AGAINST.. not open up and pivot on.. thats under the A pillar..
but AGAINST.. Thats the B pillar.. if its a soft top.. it wont have a C pillar.. but if its not.. thats the one towards the rearmost of the car.. in the case of a hard top.. the rear door will pivot on or VERY close to the REAR C pillar.. comprende!?

Didnt they teach you any of this over at that place you came in from!??

Id suggest doing a bit of reading thru the members threads on here and looking at some of the work you may be in for before deciding to just jump on the zuki bandwagon..

maybe a MQ poootrol or a auto pajero is more suitable!? just a thought.. you realise we only have 1.0-1.6 litres of engine capacity dont you!? you wont be goin much quicker than 100kmh.... at the best of times... (the lucky ones have a whopping 2.0-they reach speeds SOMETIMES in excess of 140..-on private property of course!)

Omg I'm not an idiot do have to talk down to me. I know what a magnet is just did know how it would work for inspecting a car. Everyone else thanks for all the good feedback, even if you were talkig to me like I was three. It still helped.

I'd be willing to prove that wrong... but depends if ya know what to look for at the same time.. Big magnets are often worse than little ones.. put it that way......

^^^^ cause being a range rover it will be covered in oil & it won't have rusted...

don't just use any old magnet most will be to strong to test for boggage... get a decent size fridge magnet.

take a multi meter thou. Lucas electrics SUCK DONKEY BALLS!

does the 88 model still have the 'load leveler' on the rear diff? odd idea that one.. I miss mine, left it at a relo's place, got hacked n used as a basher.. was SPEWIN. was a classic, so chrome bars, 2dr, big funky vinal seats.. wicked 1st car :D

only pic of it I have on the PC. will try n find the album n scan some more from its 'hay day' as a tourer...

we wernt upto anything illegal in this pic either.. honest!! :roll:
