Throw in the one with the cleanest gizzard's & see what happens..
To bench test, put a g/stick in & select gear's & turn the input shaft, won't tell you much but make you feel like you've checked something.

Hi Guys, Got a 88 sierra with a really noisy gearbox (bearings). I managed to pickup 2 spare boxes for next to nothing, but dont know alot about their history. From a quick look on the workbench they are both quite mank on the outside but have fresh oil in them. I was originally going to just rebuild one of them before putting it in but im thinking i should just stick one in and see how it goes - it cant be any worse than the current one. Is there any tricks for bench testing or things to check before sticking on in? Cheers Michael |

Yep, turned the input shaft (even got tricky and gave it a turn with the drill!) and all it told me was yep, she aint seized! Checked the oil and both have clean oil in it. I will just stick one in and see what happens! |

If you're going that far, couldn't you turn the output shaft with the drill (so high revs) and then see how hard it was to shift? Which would be like driving? i.e. wheels spinning but clutch pushed in, I know the input won't stop dead when you put the clutch in, but the speed of the drill should be lower and the synchros should do their job yes? EDIT: Still, probably just easier to put it in and take it for a drive! |

EDIT: Still, probably just easier to put it in and take it for a drive!  Be more productive...

Its only a few hours to swap em out. The 'fresh' oil wasn't a red colour was it lol? |
