Hey guys I have a lock right I want to put it.. I'm just undecided on putting it in front or rear... My car (91 Sierra) is a daily driver at the moment, its on 33's I dont have power steering and probably never will. Which ever diff misses out on the lock right will be getting a air locker one day.. Heaps of people tell me im crazy to put a lock right in the rear with on road use.... thanks |

altough i have never driven a car with a lockrite, i would have to say if the other diff will get a air locker, i would rather an airl ocker in the back than the front |

if its a daily driver id put the lockright in the front thats where mine is and the air locker is in the rear saves the clunking in carparks |

Im running a spartan in the rear and its shithouse.. Makes a 800m drive to the shops a prick. So id run it in the front if you have the option.. Welded rear would be much more managable on road.. |

I'd put it in the rear when they are in the front it makes the steering quite heavy and considering your on 33's with no power steer it will already be somewhat heavy Plus having an airlocker up front means less stress on cvs |

I run an lockrite in the rear, Kind of pushes the car into a touch of oversteer if you go from coasting around a corner to accelerating.. a little less 'pedal to the floor' solves this tho They clunk a bit and you get a lot of weird looks but overall its not as bad as I've heard people say.. I'd go an Air locker in the front, Mainly so you can control when its on so you have less chances of snapping front axles.. However, if yoru getting an Air locker, I'd do away with the lockwrong and go air lockers from the start.. onlyy my opinion tho lol.. Ron |

I would put it in the front Sierras with rear lockers only are a pain in the ass off road. The rear tries to overtake the front all the time . Put it in the front and weld the rear till u get ur airlocker |

Ok, i had mine front and rear in my sierra and if i had the choice rear would be it. Coz the front when locked is an absolute prick when going slow without power steering, especially when going between hard and easy obstacles where you dont really need it. An air locker in the front so that you can turn it on and off is the go. The lock rights do take a little to get used to, especially around slow carpark and the like. You'll need to learn the sweet spot so it doesnt pulse and buck. |

i run a locrite front and airlocker rear.Really dont think id swap it around either. For over 2 years i had a welded rear and forgot just how good a open diff is on road. The banging and clanging and unpredictability of a auto in the rear makes for them being quite dangerous so i have been told anyway by a close mate with a bit of experience on this. up front the locrite made so much difference to my car,but i have power steer and still feel that it is there.it is not heavy steer as such but it does push you along.ive found on dry forest tracks etc i go back to 2wd until i need 4 just so it drives better but if you have any sort of moisture on the ground its fine.in the rocks its not a problem and mine is relatively quiet. Get power steer aswell and i think you will love it in the perfect world we would all have air both ends but its not so. My opinion anyway |

I have Lockrites front and rear. It does change behaviour on road having one in the rear, but not so much that you can't adapt your driving style to work around it. Apart from the 'click-click-click' of a tight turn in a carpark, I don't think anyone driving behind me would be able to tell I had one in anymore. Offroad I tend to drive in 2WD most of the time with my transfer modded so I can select 2WD Low. I have both front hubs locked in so can get full 4WD by just selecting 4WD in the transfer. It's pretty difficult to turn like that though, so I only use it on sections I just can't get thru in 2WD. On the odd occasion that the bulk of a track is too slippery to drive in 2WD alone, I unlock the driver's hub and drive in 4WD. That gives me 100% drive to both rears and passenger front. If I get stuck, I only have to lock in the driver's front to have all 4 wheels again. An air locker would be great, definitely - but for the use I give them, I'm more than happy with the Lockrites both ends. If putting in one only, I'd go rear for sure. |

front, cause you can unlock a hub, can't do that with the rear.... |

I have mine in the rear. When I am driving up an obsticle all the weight goes to the back increasing traction. If i had one in the front it would not do alot except spin the tyres due to no weight on them and probably break CV's. Also I guess the longer wheel base makes it nicer to drive on my car. The lockright locks and unlocks as it should I find it very predictable to drive with. |

id go rear, i have just put a lockrite in my rear and to be honest its not that bad. the 1st time i drove it i hated it but after a day or so you soon learn. if u dont like the click click click then dw, if you have ur windows up and have the music on you dont even hear it. only when ur try and listen for it. i drive mine daily and after 3 weeks im use to it. best advice i can give, use 125ml of G70 additive ( http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Manual ... Treatment/ ) with nulon 80w90 Mitch |

Heavier cars and bigger tyres make auto lockers work a bit better. Light cars tend to stay locked. Longer cars handle it better too. My Vitara LWB has powertrax lock rite rear, and spartan front. Spartan was a bit rough, until it bedded in with use. I'll never afford an air locker, anyway. I'd say put it in the front, air lock the rear if a daily driver. Properley fitted auto lockers unlock in tight rocky situations, air locker stays locked, risking cv's, unless you unlock it. |

Lockright front and air rear will be better on the road and ok offroad but it will shit you if you like to do beachwork. I have two in the LJ and only time it's a PITA is driving in 4wd hi trying to go fast. |

Auto lockers destroy Uni's, backlash, bearings and twist spines. |

well I ran them front and back for a long time aswell with no issues, so what. the bloke wasn't asking if you liked them just which end of his rig to put them in. performance to dollar wise they are pretty hard to beat, yes they have some down sides but so does welding the diff. do they work? absolutely! personally I think they are more of an advantage off road in the back of the car but thats jmo. they still allow you to steer the car properly under power and when climbing the weight is on the rear anyway. |

I agree the weight transfers to the rear when climbing so you have traction to drive said obstacle Lockrites aren't that bad they work you just need to get used to them |

Don't think it's been mentioned yet - auto locker in rear is not road legal. Front is fine. It's not something that gets picked up on often, but it's part of the NCOP. VSB14 Section LB (NCOP4) Transmission 2.3 wrote: The differential must not be locked either by the use of spools or welding to prevent any difference in speed between the wheels on any axle. A proprietary part-time differential locking device may be utilised, provided that the driver can control it from the normal seating position.
Not sure that VSB is enforceable in all states - definitely is here in WA though. Just for consideration |
