I had this idea which to me thus far seems good. And I thought I'd check with the experienced and advanced minds of AZ members on their opinion.

So, I have a 1ltr transfer which I need to do the seals on then is ready to swap. As well as the 1.3 transfer currently in my zook. And I am getting reduction gears when I can afford them. 4.9 are pretty much bang on what is necessary for me. But I can forsee times where I would definitely like/prefer 6.5s. The only problem I have with 6.5s is the VERY occasionally (1-3 time a year) I travel a few hours for a holiday of some sort and doing 80 the whole way would be painful.

So I was thinking having the 6.5s in 99% of the time. And swapping the 1ltr in for the long travel.

Good or stupid idea?

If your running 31's with 6.5's it would be fine. I have 6.5's with 30's and still sit on 100 on the highway reving at about 4100ish. Stuff changing transfers to do a holiday drive :( In saying that it wouldn't be to bad if you were only doing the change 2 or 3 times a year i guess.

Hmm, i thought 31's would be around 80 and 3500rpm..
then maybe i wont. ill use the 1ltr till i get 6.5s then sell it.

My 6.5's with 29's put me at 3800rpm for 100km/h

just over 4000rpm for 110km/h, I'd have to check, but my zook doesn't like 110km/h anyway, gotta be foot to the floor, it likes 100 though, can cruise at that with bugger all pedal...

6.5 gears will drop your high range by about 20% from stock. A 1ltr case will drop high by about 12%

The 4.9 gears you want to get sit somewhere in the middle at about 16%

If i was in your shoes id go for the 6.5's. Low range is so much better and easier on your clutch and your revs are up only a few hundred when on the HWY which is good when you have bigger heavier wheels and stuff on it.

Okie dokie then. I'll get the 6.5s and a full exhaust and I should be right!

Cheers for the insight.
