A 2in suspension lift would be ok... but 29in tyres would attract unwanted attention...

^^ what he said... and your gearing will suffer heaps too.

honestly, go 215/75r15 BFG KM2 tyres and 2" springs/shocks. then save up another $1500 and get an airlocker for the rear... the car will technically be illegal with the 2" springs and 215's but no one would bat an eyelid at it, and the airlocker will allow it to go places a sierra on 29's unlocked cant go.

haha i think you're just lucky lyall... getting a canary when you cant afford to return it to stock in the month or whatever they give you to do it means you're fucked =) not worth the risk.

Disagree. Go talk to Vermin, we have had the discussion millions of times. Tyre size means alot.

I drove around with 235's and 2" suspension lift. The police pulled me over several times and never said a word.

1500$ for an airlocker :| Where the hell do you shop?!

Author:  alien [ Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:26 am ]
Post subject:  Re: perth trip?

i agree tyre size counts for a lot, and im not saying dont do it ever, just dont heavily modify until you're off the P's and can afford to do it right (engineer it). Just cos the cops never pinged you for it doesnt mean they cant, and lets not forget the liability issues if an illegal mod causes an accident.

$1500 for an airlocker was a rough figure for drive in - drive out with the big compressor.

Post subject:  Re: perth trip?

Do you think that if you had a crash they would defiantly pay out on your claim even though you have a engineers certificate?

Author:  alien [ Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:35 am ]
Post subject:  Re: perth trip?

yep, cos even if a modification was the cause of the crash, the modifications are engineered - so the engineer himself then takes on the liability and i am covered.

This said im only insured 3rd party... i was talking more about manslaughter charges etc as the result of someone dying in the accident caused by the mod. If its engineered then no charges can be pressed on me, if its not then i go to jail for 20 years or whatever it is.

It's funny how they say the max lift a car can have is 2" yet when we fit OME springs I've seen car's go up to almost 4"... The law is so vague that I doubt anything could come of something so small... I guess it'd be different if someone was running around with a 10" lift, that's just asking for trouble.

Post subject:  Re: perth trip?

I have 3" lift and 235's an driven past heaps of cops, and have had them following me with tyres just sticking out side the guards, not one of them has looked twice, touch wood, even the other night drove past a booze bus with led's on not one of them looked.

Post subject:  Re: perth trip?

by the letter of the law if its lifted 4" its illegal. Engineers and the department of transport have files with standard vehicle heights in them and they can check to those records. The law isnt vague at all... its written very clearly (i just posted this in another thread):

in WA its no more than 50mm lift INCLUDING tyre lift.

From the NCOP that WA follow: www.infrastructure.gov...eb2006.pdf from: www.infrastructure.gov..._ncop.aspx (page 20/71, section 4.10)
Modifications that result in raising the vehicle body greater than 50mm are to be carried out and approved in accordance with Codes LS7 and Code LS8.

LS7 - page 61 - point 1: Design of modifications that result in the vehicle body being raised by more than 50mm from the original "as manufactured" height.

Page 63: Wheels & Tyres - The overall tyre diameter can be increased by up to 26mm (four wheel drive vehicles only). Tyres fitted to commercial vehicles must not be more than 50% wider that the vehicle manufacturer's widest optional tyre.

The wheel track of off-road and four wheel drive vehicles must not be increased by more than 25mm...

LS8 - page 68 - point 1: Design of modifications that result in the vehicle body being raised by more than 50mm from the original "as manufactured" height. which includes points 6. installation of body lift and 7. alternative wheel and tyre specifications with modified axles or suspension.

So in essence.. a 215/75r15 is in fact ILLEGAL to run on a vehicle that has a stock 205/70r15 as its 35.5mm larger - exceeding the maximum allowed increase by 9.5mm, and running a larger tyre in combination with a lift of 50mm or more is also illegal.

Cool huh? =)

Not really that cool, most police turn a blind eye to it anyway. You can go pay thousands of dollars for some hilux springs to be engineered to fit your sierra. I just don't understand why you didn't buy a hilux.

Post subject:  Re: perth trip?

its that kind of attitude that gives 4wders a bad name chris.

it wasnt thousands of dollars to engineer it, it was more like $1500 - and the engineer picked up things that we could improve on to make things stonger or more reliable. It also meant doing the lane change test which proved to him (and me) that it handled well. In my opinion it was money well spent to ensure a top quality job.

just because most police turn a blind eye to it doesnt mean its not unroadworthy in the eyes of the law, and doesnt mean one day something happens and you're in big trouble.

i was also making a point on worst case scenario of flaunting those laws, not saying anyone that does so is going to jail for doing it. again, an immature attitude to the detriment of others.

Monkey - a 2" body lift is legal so long as you dont increase the tyre size or raise the suspension =)

yup... like i said in the post above, 2" lift and 215/75r15 is technically illegal on both a jimny and a sierra (they both come with 205/70r15 stock).

i havent been pulled over once in my rig other than one non-related supposed infringment and thats in 4 years of using it as a daily.
I mainly ran 31" tyres during that time, with some severley modified suspension and engine swap.
As long as your not doing bog laps of n/bridge or freo you will get by with 31's provided you go to the extra effort of keeping it standard looking and clean inside and out.

i have been through a couple of boozebusses and also past a fair few police stations,
my jimny is around 9 inchs higher, and the tires where out side the guards enough to notice,
touch wood, if your polite to the officer or as MrRocky said, not driving like an idiot u should be right

It's not a slap on the wrists from the cops I would be worried about.

I'd be worried about your insurer saying no to settling a claim when you hit a $100,000 BMW.

Not usually an issue, but something to always keep in mind.

Post subject:  Re: WA Talk about circles

Yep, I've read the same docs as alien. It comes down to the roof height -tyres, suspension, body lift etc not exceeding 50mm from standard (could try putting the soft top down). The same documents also covers seats, steering wheels, tyre width, roll bars, bonnet scoops etc. I guess the question is whether you will get a sticker or whether you are are insured/liable if you ever get into the shit....
